Mine never spread, and I have yet to figure out why it chipped off in those areas and not anywhere else.

I'm planning on re-painting the entire truck this summer if the funds are available. It needs a refresh.

    Thanks Superloki24
When did you first notice that the areas by the door were peeling?
It always seems to be on the blue color. There is a customer support program on the white color Toyota vehicles.

I noticed it this past spring (2019) so the truck was only 5 years old at the time.
I'm hoping that they (Toyota) will start to do something about the issue with the blue colour soon. It would be nice if I could get something out of it from them, rather than pay out of pocket for my own re-paint of the truck.

I hear ya. They do have that customer support program for white paint, but apparently nothing for Blue yet. I wonder how many others have the peeling door pillar issues? Makes me real cautious about buying a Tacoma, even though they’re probably the best truck out there. Damages Toyota’s reputation.

Well this royally sucks. I just noticed paint peeling in the exact same area on my 2015 PreRunner Double Cab (Blue Ribbon Metallic paint). The kicker is, I have 1 more payment!

Has anyone contacted Toyota and gotten a response? I read a couple of post mentioning this. My plan is to call the dealer and see what they say (don't expect them to help). Next, I am going to get some quotes on sanding/painting this area. My biggest concern is not knowing why the paint failed in this area. I am the original owner and everything is stock. I do not use any fancy chemicals to wash my car, nor do I use anything on the weather sealing. For those who got this fixed professionally, how much did it run you?

Here are some pics of my door paint issue:

Id go this route, It would be the most economical. Like you mentioned previously, it's in an out of the way place and not too noticeable, so maybe the color can be just "close enough".

    Tacomonkey/etc,
I ended up not purchasing the truck because of the paint issue that seems to be emerging. I did talk to Toyota national and they said they have a “customer support program“ which I guess is like a recall for their two flavors of white paint. Look it up. People with white paint are really getting hammered. Now it seems to be hitting the blue. What color will be next? I’m left wondering is a tacoma that might have blue spring paint anywhere into years better than a Nissan or Chevy or etc.?
As these paint issues arise in color after color I think Toyota is going to regret not being proactive.

That's very unfortunate. Up until this paint issue, I haven't had any issues with my Taco - owned it for nearly 5 years now. Besides maintenance (oil change, filter, etc), I only had to replace my battery (last year). I really hope this paint issue is isolated in the location its currently in. I actually just emailed Toyota USA about this issue. Lets see if they respond.

Good luck Tacomonkey. Please keep me informed if you hear anything. I’ll do the same. I’m sure Toyota has a lot more information than we do. It is a bummer because it is such a nice truck. As was my tundra before the rust.
Incidentally, I am located in Connecticut I wonder if the paint blistering tends to occur in cold climates? I think the white paint issue has to do with exposure to ultraviolet light which I assume is stronger in places like Arizona

I live in the South. Funny you mention cold because we just went through a cold spell recently. Its usually warm to hot here. Never any snow.

The south. Perhaps you have an opinion or some advice. I’m I am going to buy a Tacoma, paint questions be damned. But in Connecticut we have so much road salt, rust is always an issue.
Do you have any thoughts on using those Internet car buying sites and what areas of the country might be:
    1. Salt free (either Ocean or snow)
    2. Internet car purchases. There is a company That has mechanics all over the country to inspect vehicles for $250.
    Any thoughts?
I think I’ll also start a new thread about this

I would start a new thread. The only internet sites I've used to purchase past vehicles were carsdirect (to get a bunch of quotes) and CarMax. I bought my Tacoma brand new from a local dealer.

Well I emailed Toyota Canada a while back and this was the response I got:

    """Dear Mr. XXXXXXX:

Thank you for your correspondence and for your continued patronage to Toyota Canada. We are pleased to have gained your approval as a vehicle manufacturer. We are sorry to learn of your concerns regarding the paint on your 2014 Tacoma. Please accept our apologies for the delay in our reply.

Please be assured that we certainly do not like to see our customers experience the frustration and inconvenience that are associated with unexpected repairs. We would like to mention that extensive planning and research are required in order to ensure the highest quality of components is used on our vehicles. However, it is difficult to establish the life expectancy of a component or predict when a failure will occur. There are many variables that will contribute to their durability.

With regard to your enquiry, while it is our goal to assist our customers whenever possible, our Customer Assistance Centre is not equipped to provide a diagnosis of your vehicle or repair advice. Instead, we rely on our technical experts at Toyota Dealerships to diagnose, maintain and repair Toyota vehicles. That being said, the Service Department of your local Toyota dealership, Campbell Toyota would be in the best position to diagnose your vehicle and to offer their professional opinions.

We would like to take this opportunity to mention that the paint on your vehicle is covered by the Comprehensive Coverage warranty, which is for 3 years or 60,000 km from the Warranty Registration Date of your vehicle. Toyota Canada would be unable to offer assistance to any repair costs in this instance.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us. We hope this information was helpful.

    Sincerely,

    Allen Awale
    Customer Assistance Centre
    Toyota Canada Inc.
    """

When I call my dealer, they say they can't do anything because it is out of warranty and that I should call Toyota Canada.......round and round we go, when we stop.....nobody knows....

Well it sure took them a lot of words to blow you off.
I took the truck that I was looking at, to my local dealer and while they were polite they said the exact same thing. “You’re on your own.” Frustrating. I’m sure they have a lot more information.
If they would only tell us that in two years it is going to be a paint peeling nightmare or that it only has affected this one area of the truck, or just something like “none of the reports we have had extended to other areas of the body“, I’d be satisfied.

Is it possible the clear coat was missed in those areas and the paint had no protective surface.

I've been having this issue on my Super White 2014 Tacoma. I just called the dealership and Toyota corporate, and the recall is not including Tacoma. Literally covers every car with this same color code other than Tacomas and Tundras.

Gee that’s a disappointment. I don’t think that’s a good business decision but I don’t run Toyota. Hopefully they will change their mind

I just noticed this same issue on the drivers door jam of my 15 Blue Ribbon. I bought the extended warranty and the rust protection package so hopefully one of those will cover it. Like others have said, it's an out of the way spot so no big deal to DIY it but where else is going to peel ?

Well now it's peeling in the top corner of my rear drivers door so a much bigger problem now. I got a quote from Maaco for $1200.00 to fix as they have to paint both doors to blend it in, too hard to mask the door badge so must be replaced etc etc. The estimator suggested going after Toyota but it doesn't sound like that has worked out for anybody yet. The kicker is that I was a sucker for the extended warranty but the fine print says that paint is one of the many items not covered. That $3000.00 (yes,I know. I already said I was a sucker) would have paid for a paint repair and then some.
