Gearing Questions (V6 Auto)

Was wondering for re-gearing, would 4.30 or 4.56 be better? 265 - 285/75r16 Tires, tube front bumper, plate rear with swing out, and ifs and t-case skids. 4x4 v6 Auto, Ext cab. Was wondering, because I've seen a ton of threads for manual trans gearing, but not many for auto. Towing semi-often, along with pulling a camper trailer (probably around 1500-2000 Lbs) full time on a road trip in the future.

Not sure, I assume stock, just researching before I get one, to stock pile parts

 

You won't feel a 4.10 to 4.30 swap much, if at all, but 4.10 to 4.56 now we're talkin.

 

I've read that 4.56's make your rpm hella high when highway crusing, or is that just for manual? Truck will also be daily driver

 

High rpm with low load is better than low rpm with high load.

 

Low load steering? Like easier to steer or something?

Ah ok, essentially re-gearing makes the load lower, so 4.56's would probably be the best option. Do you get a decent/more amount of torque back with re-gearing, or is it not really noticeable?

 

since you are moving to larger tires, when you re-gear you bring that target rpm back in range for HP/TQ so it acts as it does now. if you just add larger tires you will notice "power loss" as it requires lower gear to maintain speed and will shift constantly trying to keep up.

Also consider if stock is good enough. I know my truck is pretty heavy and has a bunch of wind resistance due to the camper I built.

I have 4.10 gears on 255 85 16 (33”) mud terrains. 4.56 will be lower than stock but I don’t think It’ll be sufficient so I’m going with 4.88’s.

 

I thought about 4.88's too, but I think 4.56's might be a happy medium, we'll see eventually

Well, not a super amount of weight, just a tube front and rear bumpers, tube tire swingout tailgate (saw an epic one on here, cant remember from where though...), sliders, skids, some misc lights, and towing a RTT Trailer (maybe like 1300#'s fully loaded, maybe a tad more). Think maybe might just get 4.56's, if I don't like em/need more power, I can sell/give them and get 4.88's. But I would think higher gearing -> higher rpm = Lower mpg, and I kinda wana keep it decent, since I will be going all over the u.s with it. But who knows

 

IMO, 4.88s at the minimum with the auto and 33s. Especially if you are any heavier that stock. 70 mph with be 2500 rpm.

Having said all that, sometimes I wish I had gone with 5.29s instead of the 4.88s.

 

Yeah, I have been looking a bit at the rpm's, and have also heard the v6's are rev-happy. 4.88's? Hmmm....How do you like the 4.88's with the auto?

 

my 70 mph with 31's and 4.10 was around 2200, so I don't think you would be up in the 3's without shifting
