Shear in Cali has to have full perimeter and field nailing. The perimeter nailing will be called on the plans for each section and the field is always 6". Anything that's less then 4" on perimeter nailing will also require a 3x stud where panels butt. That same 3x would also be used for the block line. I use 4x instead of 3x for all shear that requires it. It's easier to get and it's also easier to lay out.

You can run shear horizontal as long as you are using 4x8 sheets. They have no shear/strength axis. As soon as you use 4x10 sheets, aka Tall Wall, you must run them vertically. Tall wall shear does have a strength axis. In CA tall wall sheets are pretty much the standard and you seldom find 4x8 sheets in use for shear. They only get used for roof and sub-floor.

same here for shear walls having to be fully supported and nailed perimeter but like I said here our plywood is almost always run horizontally so blocking gets installed in line with panel edges whereas his blocking is alternating but they are using vertical sheets , and I actually did notice a "TallWall" logo on their OSB in one episode

It would make sense if he was running 3 bays at the same height then running 3 bays at a different height. Every other bay makes no sense to me at all.

Almost all houses I work on are 10' ceilings. To make shear easy I go from rim to rim. You have to add another 14 1/2" block between each bay tight to the rim but it's worth it. It gives you the required 3" for nailing the perimeter edge and it also locks the joists in place preventing them from ever rolling. If I lay out a house correctly the only place I use block lines for shear nailing is on gable ends.

Gotcha. Those aren't nail lines. They're just wall stiffeners. They help keep the studs straight. It's a pretty simple slab on grade ranch. His shear has perimeter nailing on the mud plate and the top plates.

 

So are blocking elevations so they don't fall on drywall joints or no relation to that

whats the concept with the double wall at the garage door that is shown next in that video

 

No relation that I can think of without having the plans in front of me. I can see why he offsets them though. Having one low and one high does a better job of keeping the studs straight. I've always run them at the same height but I'll try the offset way on my next build.

That's a good question. They both have headers on them so I'm going to guess roof load. Why they didn't just build it out of 12" LVL I don't know. It could be a cost issue?

Now I've got a question for you. Have you ever used single piece White Oak trim for window case? It's a jam extension and case in one. Basically 2x4 White Oak with 3/4" x 2 3/4" taken out so it makes a 90 with no seams on the front edge. That shit is really hard to make perfect. It was what I was working on before I got some unexpected time off. lol

 

is that blocking a code requirement ?

Re: your trim question , no . I've never actually even used white oak at all prior to my current job where I have a few white oak details to match the flooring

Where I live trim is usually paint grade or clear douglas fir

 

I have the Echo version of the Kombi system. I love it. I have string trimmer, brush cutter, and pole saw attachment and they all work great. Changing tools is fast and easy

 

No. It's not a code requirement on walls. On floors anything longer then 10' bearing to bearing needs a mid-span block line. Some guys also do them in walls. I put them in tall walls only. Regular walls get built on the ground, sheared, then stood up with wall jacks.

 

here we try to limit through blocking for thermal bridging issues , floors have to be blocked or braced at max 7'6" intervals

I just bought 2 pairs of Proctor wall jacks but haven't had a chance to use them yet

 

Wall jacks are worth their weight in chiropractic visits. Cut some metal packing straps into 24" sections and set them aside. Once the walls built slip them under the bottom plate and nail them with 1 1/2" ticos to the top of the bottom plate in line with the floor joists. Put the wall where it needs to be for standing then nail the strap with a few 16s through the sub floor into the joits. Stand up wall.

Some guys just toenail the back edge of the wall to the joists. I've been there when those toe nails ripped out and it's not good. Use packing straps. lol

My DIY Approach to Double Paned Stained Glass Windows

I seem to finally have time to double pane/enclose my front door side light stained glass windows... probably not the recommended way....

The most tedious part... cleaning the stained glass. Q-Tips, glasses cleaner and cloth.


I'm using glazers tape to hold it all together...


My wooden spacers... I'm telling myself it's a better thermal break...[The pros use aluminum channels with desiccant]


So, this was the trickiest part... I needed to remove the tape covers and place the glass on top, in alignment. You only get one chance with glazers tape. I thought about a jig, doing it on it's side with a spacer... In the end, I asked my wife for help.
Now for the other side...

So, the pro's have a, er, "tar gun" that oozes black goo around the edges. I'm using butyl tape.

Then, I had to decide on edge tape... what did I have lying around... Foil duct tape?


Going to install this one today!

Anybody else have an unhealthy obsession with their grass?? This is a before and after from a year and half ago when we built the house. I put down some fert this weekend and also got this tree beside the house cleaned up.

 

I do too. This was mid season last summer, took a couple years to turn it from a salad bar into actual grass.

 

Looks good! And same here, it's a constant battle with the neighbor who couldn't care less about what weeds he blows over into my yard. I also got a late start on my pre-emergent so I'm paying for it now.
