Well painting a car is different than painting fiber board.

Painting is an art.

 

I probably wouldn't mind having the roof of the 4runner done in white wrap. Great for reflecting the sun during the summer here. Remember, I'm in Tucson, the sun is harsher here than CA for paint.

So if the 1st Gen had hard rooflines like the 2nd and 3rd gen, I would 100% wrap the roof. But it's smooth down to the cab with no hard lines, so a wrap would look pretty ugly and obvious even if I made it the same glossy black.

 

You're right. It's single stage.

Most cars still do that. The free color for a Model 3 is single stage white.

 

They don't, Toyota white is always single stage

Yeah, wrapping the roof on a 1st gen Taco would be tough, you'd have to do the whole thing probably. Good wrapper could probably make it work tho. But probably not a DIY person with little experience.

 

Interesting, thats cool to know cause i wanna paint the 4 runner white,

I put clear on the tacomas tailgate and the shine and texture matched perfectly to the original paint on the bed didnt think that evel of shine was possible with a single stage

I could see wrapping just the roof working to where you won't see it unless you're on a ladder, or tall enough to see the roof. But my clear is corroded down to the door sills.

 

No wonder the Taco paint still looks good out here!

 

On the 4runner, you'd only see the leading edge above the windshield. That's where the paint is most fubar'd too.

 

I've go to do it soon, because I think rust is going to happen soon. It's eating through the base coat now.

 

My clear started to fail 1 year ago. It has since all but disappeared

 

You have to pull the windshield to do it proper. The rust will start from behind the windshield

Single stage paint can be polished up to look just like it has a perfect coat of clear, or you can let it go dull, as long as you don't scrape down to the primer you aren't going to hurt it. If you let it oxidize you just polish back to a shine and it's fine again though probably a few microns less thick. It won't last forever but if taken care of it lasts a fuckload longer than normal paint with clear.
