huh intersting, I had assumed that bikes would fall under the same rules as cars and it was my understanding that you don't get hit with a sales tax on used car purchases in cali...

after a google search, I believe I may be wrong on the used car sale tax....

Nope, not here. You get hit with the sales tax upon registration transferal. At least I think. When I went to get a loan to buy a bike private party they included the tax in the loan. So Maybe the seller is supposed to pay it. I'm not 100% sure.

now I am confused, I thought since the plates stay with the used car that there was no sale tax on purchase

maybe @Don5352 can help shine some light on this, I believe he has been a CA born and raised lifer...

I'm fairly certain the seller is supposed to pay the tax. But they probably don't ever. I've never privately sold a vehicle here before so I'm not sure the official process

The buyer pays it when they go register it at the DMV. I’ve sold a few cars and part of the process is the seller listing the sale price. DMV determines the sales tax on what you list on the pink slip. Common thing for craigslisters is to move the decimal over one digit to help you out. Or if you’re buying from a buddy you list the sale price as $1 and if they ask, you tell them you won a bet.

There it is. I knew it had something to do with the DMV process though.

Seems decent for the price, have to decide how bad I want it and if I can afford another bike on top of what I'll be spending on my truck. Yeah PA charges sales tax unfortunately along with title transfer fee and registration. I assume insurance would be really cheap on it.

Since it’s a friend, I’m sure you could just BS the number you paid for it. Like @GHOST SHIP said, you “won a bet” and only had to pay a few hundred dollars.

1500 would be a great price if possible, given it is a few years old and the current economic crisis and all...
I am in the same boat though, just figuring out how much I want this and if I want to pick it up before the xr50 is finished
lol I have never owned one...

i had said I liked the small BW80s...

it is the atc70 really though that I want... had one in front of me that I walked away from some years back... and still kicking myself in the ass over it.

The price can be massaged a bit but tax would only be $120 so not bad.

The state will ask questions though if it's far enough from the value lol. Years ago I bought a Maxima from my father in law for $2500. Couple months later I got a letter from PA asking why I paid so little. My FIL had to write a letter explaining the reason and that the sale price was legitimate.

They got tired of everyone saying they paid 1000. for a 10,000 dollar car.

in VA its within reason. I guess that means if someone paid 1k for a 10k car (like a 2018 BMW), then they would go off of NADA. But if someone says they paid 1k for a 3k car (like a 1986 BMW) then it would be more reasonable and they'd let it slide.

In NC, we pay sales tax when buying a vehicle from a dealer. For private party sales, the buyer has to pay a highway usage tax (HUT) when registering the vehicle in their name. The HUT is assessed on the vehicle's tax value. It doesn't matter what you pay. And just as you would expect, both the sales tax and HUT is 3% of the value. Either way, the state is going to get their money!
