    Don't know anything about the 4th gen. I doubt if it will anything like the 3rd gen, 2nd gen and 1st gen 6lug trucks. IOW I don't think it will look like a lifted 5lug.

    My guess? It will be slightly larger than the current generation. This is America, the bigger the better.

    Ford will fill the compact truck void next year with a sub $20k unibody pickup truck codenamed P8758.

    I have read a few hints, and I highly suspect that the next Tacoma and Hilux will be differentiated in name only.

    The Tacoma needs a boost in capability, and the Hilux has become more and more of the Daily Driver rather than a farm hand like it used to be. The two trucks will likely become one and simply keep their old names in the markets that are used to them.

    It sounds like all Toyota Body-on-Frame trucks are going on the TNGA-F platform, so I'm expecting to see a few less redundant models (4Runner/Fortuner/Prado) across the entirety of Toyota's range.

    You're in the minority, though.

    Most people who can buy a $70k Truck will be cross shopping it with F-Series Luxury Sedans. Most people who want to off road in the US would buy a Jeep for cheaper, pocket the cash difference for mods and inevitable repairs and still have money left over. Lastly, most folks who are throwing down $70k on a vehicle will sell it and throw down another $70k next year on another vehicle (ad infinitum or until they're bankrupt, whichever comes first).

    That leaves a decidedly small market for the 70 Series to compete in, since North America really isn't looking to have that kind of go-anywhere capability above all else. We expect even base model vehicles to have decent creature comforts and amenities. My $30k Tacoma SR looks like a luxury car next to a 70 Series interior, so there's no way someone will drop that much for one.

    And that's ignoring emissions and crash safety laws etc.

    You’re right to a point. From what I understand of the modular platforms is there are some set points to them. Like you stated engine and driveline mounts. VW’s MLB system they were able to change the lengths of their vehicles but the width was pretty much the same. I’m not sure how Toyota’s system is going to be. Are we going to get a shorter Tundra width like truck? Perhaps Toyota’s system is modular enough to adjust width. I’m excited to see both new trucks.

    I was generalizing a bit. The extents that can be done is pretty spectacular. Just looking at the variation in Subaru or Mazda / For lines is amazing to me.

    Considering frames versus unibody, I would think there is a lot more flexibility?

    European crash safety standards are better than ours, but our emissions are stricter on pollutants over greenhouse gasses vs eu is the opposite

    The previous trucks got bad publicity for rolling over. Keeping high ground clearance while lowering the COG means squeezing the passengers. Personally, I’d give up a little clearance then put in adjustable air shocks in the OR models.

    But smaller to me just means shorter. Take a foot off the bed in the extra cab model to 5 feet and voila, you have a great off-roader. IMO, they’d sell a ton. Bed extenders work great for off road bikes and atvs in the back. Nothing lost.

    Pickup trucks are getting bigger and bigger, but highways aren't growing, so this s*** has to stop at some point. Super Duty trucks with the high thick front end seem less aerodynamic, while most semis are dropping the nose. Ironic.
