Anything welding

I have a magnet I use for metel in the eyes. I've had to use it 3 or 4 times. No trips to the ER (fingers crossed I didn't just jinx myself).

 

Hey I was gouging and grinding. Hood to face shield on my hardhat, glasses under the shield. Still got it. Shit gonna get in there if you're doing it right.

 

Like said above safety glasses and goggles reduce the chances of getting forign objects in your eyes. They don't eliminate the chances.

I wear protective eyewear 100 percent of the time. I still get shit in my eyes.

 

I’ve gotten so much out with q tips is ain't even funny. I’ve gotten a lot while in funny positions grinding and it bounce off of other stuff and get in there.

 

Yep, I've been taking my gear off before and just had stuff fall in there that had been sitting on the top of my faceshield/hood/beanie. I always took precautions but hell, when you're covered in rust and shavings it's bound to happen.

 

Wow, that is a very nice set up. You are giving me ideas... I do not have a fridge in my shop. I also like your cart very much. I hate the one that came with my (older) 211. Thinking to do something like what you have there.

How long did it take to part off that table top with the abrasive saw?

thought I'd throw this tutorial out there, I found it last night, I'm new to this myself and thought it was pretty good, includes safety, technique, and a couple tricks. Probably the best of the youtubes I've watched on oxy / acc.

It’s awesome seeing everyone’s home shop builds. I’ve been obsessed with building stuff do
my own home shop. I’ve been cutting pieces for stuff when I get spare time. Once I get a few trucks out of the shop hopefully I can find the time to weld it up.

Here’s a low profile metal rack I built for storing my dom tubing. I used scrap I’ve had in my scrap rack for years so nothing matches. I made them all as seperate units so I can grow as shrink the rack as needed. The final space it’s gonna end up in is 22’ long.

That was a phenomenal video, thanks for sharing. That hose clamp trick blew my mind a little.

 

Always was amusing watching the fitters spend all day in a tank grinding. Wore full face respirators and would wear fire resistant hood over them. The new guys would come out of the tank and just rip that crap off and then get shavings all over themselves. Then you'd watch the experienced guys grab their air hoses and blow themselves off then bend over so their heads pointing down to take off everything. The smart new guys watched and learned....the dumb ones.....it took awhile lol

 

Thanx. Fridge was actually in the house when we bought it, after updating the kitchen appliances right away it went right in the garage.. I was stoked. It’s mostly garage beer but for parties it’s a nice overflow fridge for food. Cart is a funny story, I’m working with limited wall space so to do the weld table/back splash I needed to know exactly where the cart was going to butt the table within a couple inches of the cart which is within a couple inches to the 220 outlet I put in. After getting the steel I saw Harbor Frieghts cart were $40 so to save time I went and got one, put it together and my machine didn’t fit on it by 1/2”. I was like welp guess I’ll make one.. The top plate to the table was surprisingly not as long as I anticipated, maybe 10mins of cut time. In fact I was procrastinating on cutting it thinking how much it was gonna suck. It’s a 3/8” plate that I cut it with a 6” grinding wheel. Garage fridge is great! Mostly holding beers but works good for extra food when we have parties. It was the original fridge in the house when we moved in. We moved it into the garage after getting a new one for the house.

 

I made a similar rack for my steel and well as one for my lumber..

I made a basic rack especially thinking I would be holding that much steel. After seeing yours and going in and out of the rack recently I think I’m going to add that top angle section to mine to keep pieces from being buried under each other.

Your rack looks simple and clean I dig it.


Here’s a few pics of my home shop I’ve been working on. I completely removed everything in my garage to epoxy the floor and create a dream work space. I’m more of a carpenter by hobby but in the last few years metal work has become very appealing to me. I’m trying to achieve half wood shop half metal shop. Along with mechanic shop and hangout/party space. I originally gave myself about 4 months to do this.. October 2018 lol

Another question for everybody. What square / rectangle tube dimension and wall thickness would you recommend for building a simple rack that would support a roof top tent and spare tire? The tent is 72x48" closed and 166lbs. Span of the rack will be around 58" and I have the ability to add support in the center. I don't mind over building a bit but looking for the minimum for weight consideration.

 

If it were me, I would use 1 1/2" X 1/8" wall, it would be overkill but I like building things heavier than they should be.
