The 2005-2015 and 2016-2020 Tacoma share the same frame dimensions, same cab dimensions, same box dimensions, same front clip structural dimensions. All exterior dimension changes between a 2015 and a 2016 come from larger body panels bolted onto the same truck.

Spacer brackets were welded onto the top of the fender aprons to bolt taller fenders onto it, and the grille mounting brackets are huge to reach to where the radiator support is. The rear box side panels are taller but still bolt onto the same box. The tailgate was made thicker and more curved but the inside is still in the same spot.

I stand behind my statement that Toyota has yet to build a 3rd generation Tacoma. There are only 2. Toyota made a mid model change for 2012 and a larger update for 2016, but to call it a new generation is incorrect.

Toyota's marketing department pushed their "all new" and "new generation" advertising and it was more successful than the internal development and engineering documentation, so here we are, with apparently 3 generations of Tacoma.

A 2005 Tacoma and a 2020 Tacoma both share the same chassis code though (for models with the same engine), and the first 2016 Tacoma built wasn't serial number 000001, it was whatever the last 2015 Tacoma was plus 1.

The last Land Cruiser sold in Canada for on-road use was the FJ62 in 1989. We didn't get the 80 series at all (excluding the 1997 LX450).

The 70 series was (and kind of still is) offered in Canada, but was never offered in the USA. The SWB BJ70 was sold here for 85-87 and newer HZJ70-series trucks are still sold in Canada for off-highway mining use by Ens Toyota in Saskatchewan, which is kind of interesting, but I wish they sold them for on-road use.

The 70 series is offered with many drivetrains, some of them already used in other vehicles in North America.

Emissions and efficency arnt the same, cafe determines how many mpgs a manufacturers lineup must get, a 70 series would bring that average down

Also What engine that isnt 20 years old does/has the 70 series come with that passed us emissions?

The only ones im aware that passed us emissions are the 22re, 3f, and 1fz... all of which are older than 20 years and pretty sure (minus the fz) arnt put in the 70 series anymore

Agreed. It was more of a mid-cycle refresh with a new powertrain. Hahahaha!

I was mainly talking about just an overlaid side and front view of the hood grille area. There seems to be a bit more snout there, but nothing drastic.

Can anyone give an example of any mainline marquee model getting smaller as it's generations progressed?

I think of Nissan Z cars

Mazda Miatas (although they are pretty close)

Toyota pickups, Nissan pickups, Mustangs, etc etc.

Therefore, my bet is on bigger. But it won't be just the outside. Need more cupholders and gee whiz electronics.

This...Except like the handful of people who’ve already drawn it up. Nobody here, no wannabe “insiders” on isuckmud, and no other internet kook knows wtf.

hopefully they do a throwback body style and make it smaller. Bring back the bed hooks!

I get that, and it continues to be a concern. That said, the LC70 with a 1GR is only about 1 mpg less than an FJ Cruiser with the same engine. It's worse for sure, and all manufacturers are concerned about Cafe requirements, etc., but I'm sure if their market research said they would make money selling them here they could make it work.

The 70 series has been available with the 1GR-FE since 2009, which is what Toyota sold in Japan when they brought the 70 series back for a short production run for Japan in 2014-2015.

9 second 0-60 behind a manual, quite underpowered

But yeah at the time in 09 when transisioning from the fz to the gr the 70 could probably be imported after much hastle...

markets that got euro crash tests didnt get the gr, assuming that gr was tuned to meet emissions which places like bolivia, columbia, the middle east and japan i dont think follow us emissions

TIL that Canada never got the 80. I was a few years shy of getting a license when they would've been made (still living in Canada at that time), so that's my excuse.

The 70 series isn't exactly known as a speed demon, but I agree, if I was looking at getting one I'd prefer an engine other than the 1GR for sure.

But again, all that said, Toyota could easily put a North American-compliant engine into the 70 series and sell it here. It's not like fuel economy is all that drive's Toyota to sell certain vehicles in North America. Toyota consistently sells vehicles with the largest, least efficient versions of their drivetrains in North America.

    A few.
Exactly. If they do end up dropping the V8 in the new tundra, I could see them keeping the current model around the first year.

Hmm... wonder if toyota though about bringing that particular 70 with the gr like they did in japan for a year

They probably could have made it pass crash tests and emissions it just wouldnt be suited to the us market

Keep the Tacoma the same size but also start selling narrower Hilux.

New Tacoma std engine: 300hp turbo 4cyl. but also offer a HD 1/2 ton Taco for towing and heavy hauling with a twin turbo V6.

New Tundra std engine: Twin turbo V6 but also offer a 3/4 ton and 1 ton dually version with a turbo diesel.

I've heard they use high end plastics, you can go weeks without clipping your fingernails.

And they crammed as many turbos in as possible, in order to lower the reliability. Because it’s about hp, not making it home muthafuckas!
