When the front wheels of my 2011 Prerunner come off the back side of a speed bump or a curb, I hear a very loud scraping noise from somewhere under the front of my truck. It sounds like something dragging across the end of a piece of sheet metal, and lasts for only a second or so. It only happens when crossing a speed bump straight on, and the speed bump or curb has to be a pretty big one. It's hard to say, but I think it is coming from the middle or driver's side. I have looked repeatedly under the truck and under the hood and can find nothing loose or shiny from being scraped. I checked the coil springs and their clearance with the shock dust covers - no problem there. Also checked all bushings on upper and lower control arms. My truck is stock with only 24K total miles on paved roads, and everything is clean and tight. It has me stumped. Any ideas where to look?

^ agree with him, could be mudflaps scraping. I had to trim mine an inch or two and the problem went away.

Yes! I just checked and found the bottoms of the flaps are scraped. The more I think about it, the more I think the sound is from the hard plastic flaps scraping on the concrete bumps. Dang, I can't believe I didn't even think about the flaps. Too obvious I guess. I'm so bored, I'm going to break the stay-at-home order, make a test trip, and report back.

Whatstcp, thank you for the link to the mudflap trimming thread. And yes, I am guilty of overthinking things too often. After reading all 7 pages I convinced myself there was no need for a test trip. I took off my front flaps and cut a couple inches off of them with tin snips. I'm sure now the flaps were the cause of my problem. Forums are awesome!
