Clunk in front end with Fox 2.5 extended

I know there's other threads about this but so far I have some info on it or at least an idea where its coming from.

Fox 2.5 extended. The shop I deal with believe its coming from the lower shock mount where it sits in the LCA, although there are misalignment spacers the shock does not sit tight in as it doesn't have bushings (different shop did install and this is how the shocks came)

The shop I deal with agrees there is a sound, but haven't found anything that could be causing it, checked all steering, LCA, UCA, sway bar etc. The only thing they can find is that lower shock mount which does move as when I first brought this to them they mentioned the lower shock had shifted and was turned slightly, suggested lift it up to take weight off and put a pipe wrench on and turn it back straight so the mount isn't contacting the LCA. Did so, but it still shifts back and moves with the suspension travel.
There is wear on the mount where you can see some of the anodizing coming off from rubbing. Everything seems like yes it is coming from there, and suggestion was to put bushings in which will help hold it centre and not allow it to shift anymore. Shop has assured me this isn't really a issue in terms of it will break but its just annoying.

Basically just wondering if anyone else has had this issue or has another idea of what it could be if not that to check out.
Next year when I do my ARB bumper I'll also be swapping to 700lbs springs so at that time when the shock is out the plan is to add the bushings since this really isn't causing any issues besides noise and I only hear it if the radio is off.

I haven't been able to catch the shifting on video to verify because can't find a place to mount camera where it won't get hit or something and have the angle to see it but can definitely hear it on video.

Sound is from both sides depending on which way I'm turning etc or which shock is moving

I had the same issue and emailed fox about it. I was told it was normal. I don’t like the fact that it scratches paint off my shocks but I haven’t noticed any loss in function. There was a thread where someone added bushings to avoid the rubbing, but never updated their results.

Edit:
I had an issue with my swaybar hitting my skid brackets when going through bumps/holes. Check that out for any signs of rubbing.

 

actually since you mentioned that was the first thing I checked.
since these use a swaybar relocate I had it hitting the bracing on the mobtown skids when the lift was first done.

I since grinded that area of the skid away so its fine, when I started hearing this after the adjustment figured it was the skid again so dropped the skid but nope its fine. also drove around without skid to make sure its not coming from skid plates. still there.

So seems fox said the same thing that the shop I deal with said, its not a reliabity/mechanical issue just annoying sound. I don't see why a bushing wouldn't fix it just want to be sure thats the problem before I try anything else. And you're saying you still have the same issue never found any other culprit?

Cam bolts etc were all tight, and one of the techs there did say when he was riding with me he can almost feel it in the footwell of passenger side and at one point felt the vibration in the LCA, would make sense its something shifting in the LCA. When he felt it thought the cam bolts but checked to make sure they were tight no issues.

 

I have an occasional clunk while making sharp turns to the right. I’m not sure if its coming from the shocks though. I had a more consistent clunk with the swaybar and skid which I fixed by doing a swaybar delete.

 

Check your body bushings at the core support also. Mine squeak and clunk in some terrain. I need to swap to poly bushings.

 

I have the same shocks for 33k miles and no clunking sound. I would check the body mount bushing which is a common issue. Another issue that I did have was the skid plate bolts weren't torqued all the way after a hard weekend off roading and would pop and clunk turning from the frame flexing and causing the skid to suddenly shift.

 

cant be skids, still makes the sound with them off.

which body mounts are you referring to? all them or just the front that get the usual body mount chop?

 

The shocks will move around a little.
I had a clunk also, mine was warn out lower ball joints and/or rusted lower control arm bolts. All fixed now and makes no noise. 2010 75K 4 years of off roading, 8 years in the Wisconsin salt....

 

ya these have only been on the truck for maybe 20 000km
trucks only got 32 000km on it.

Highly doubt the ball joints etc are done.

not something I'd even waste my time with at the dealer because they'll right away say lift, warranty void bla bla bla.

 

I pretty sure everyone's truck does it. Mine does and my buddy's does.

My shock is also slightly turned on the bottom and I'm running Kings

I had the same noise even with the stock suspension

 

so all the noise is 'normal' lol

Its annoying cause I keep thinking something wrong.

I've at least figured out how to solve the ever so fucking annoying dakar leaf spring squeak.

Fairly certain it's the bottom mount in the lca. Can see paint coming off and it twisting now

 

I’m having the same problem I’m all stock, took the skid plate off to eliminate that possibility. Took it it Toyota twice now since it is still under warranty and they don’t seem to care much and brush me off. It may not be a major problem but with the amount of money we pay for vehicles now they shouldn’t be making noise like this. I could just turn the radio louder like some suggest and tune it out but after 30 some thousand I don’t like the idea of that.
