Well, yeah, Oracle are assholes. Thought that was pretty synonymous.

They have nice boats, though.

LOL yeah my first thought as soon as I hit reply. I'm not a Larry Ellison fan either. I think he might have sold his yacht but could be wrong, I try not to read anything with his name in it if I can help it.

Their large-scale database platforms are the shit, though. We're using a number of Oracle 12 RAC clusters (on RHEL 7) and they're massive..and stable AF. Full redundancy across clusters and location (with cross-country replication) for our mission critical systems. Rock solid.

Too bad they ruin everything else they touch.

Same here including cross country replication but fairly new to us only a couple of years old, time will tell. Jan. 1 we retired our mainframes, owned not leased. The mainframes and DB2 never went down. Ever. But IBM is right there with Oracle and screw up everything they buy and touch. Or end up buying and tossing in the shit can.

You made me have a flashback with Java and the first time I ran into it. Was working in the field back then and had a prerelease of Novell 4.11 so another engineer and I decided to install it on a box in the office to take a look at it. Couldn't get it to install so called Utah. First thing tech support asked was how much video memory the server had, it was 256k. He said it used Java for the install and needed at least 512k. Who the hell needs that much video memory on a server LOL. Good times.

OMG. You used the "N word."

In 1999 we executed "Operation VISINE" to "get the red out." Shut down all of our Novell servers. Network sped up dramatically without all those IPX crashes.

Worked for a Novell Platinum dealer in NC at the time after I retired from the Navy. Brought in Windows NT to the company when I got MCSE certification started on 3.51 and finished it on NT 4. Because all the customers could talk about was moving to NT when it finally came out. Have to admit that IPX was fast as a hell though. For gaming LOL. We were also one of Apple's largest resellers. There was always AppleTalk if I got bored. And Banyan Vines. And who the hell swallowed the damn token on the Ring?! I call this sit down job that I've been doing for 20 years my cushy gig. But hasn't gotten boring yet. Except for meetings, ugh. Like the one I'm in right now...

Figured but am not building my new Desktop just now, wanted to get my data actually backed up and move the new server chassis over to Linux when I do.

    Yeah.
Most big vendor's pricing models start to break once you get above a certain size. Most are open to negotiate in these cases since the math obviously starts breaking above a certain point, but we always have internal jackass developers that want to use the first price submitted as an excuse to build something themselves. They end up taking forever to build something that is much less capable, not really part of the core business, and will never be able to keep up with what is offered by companies where that IS their business. And then nobody maintains it, the developers that didn't document anything move on, and you are back in the same loop.

Linux has ldmtool. I think you could mount a Windows raid setup on Linux, but I wouldn't use it for daily use. Plus with Linux, you'll have more options to choose from on how you want to setup your new array.

Thanks, just trying to get ideas right now and work with what I have for now. I moved my desktop to a server chassis which will be a HTPC/shared drive once I build a new desktop. The new desktop won't happen for a while but I really need to get a better handle on my data and backups. The plan is to have the raid live 24/7 and have a offline backup on my external drive, which I'll periodically backup to.

FreeNAS is sort of like a DIY Drobo with more flexibility.

If you're looking for something to run a home backup system and other services, freenas is worth a look.

I've got mine running 2 mirrored 4tb pools, with a backup drive I can rotate, 3 Linux vms, a gitlab instance, and a couple other things I'm probably forgetting. Easy to setup and it's been rock solid.
