It's the auto camera feature. I have it on, myself. You can turn it on or off when you're in the front camera view and touch the "AUTO" button on the screen.
Maybe messing in the service settings enabled it?

It automatically sets the cameras that way afgter changing the truck color. If you want to turn it off, press auto with the camera screen displaying. If you want them to come back on automatically, press the camera display button by your left knee and then press auto on the screen while the cameras are displayed.

Got it to work on mine. But, it was not how he described as auto and on, middle two positions. Mine was between the DRL OFF and AUTO positions. Also, the engine does not need be running, just ignition on.

Any good breakdowns of the other settings in there? Wonder if you can change some settings that you usually would need TechStream or Carista to set, such as number of blinks of turn signal when you tap it (saw the signal settings menu on the YT video), etc.

If you turn the switch 4 times instead of 3, the rear end noise is turned off and the transmission shift pattern transitions to a 2nd gen tacoma mode.

*UPDATE* Yesterday, I went and checked to see if I can get the diagnostic screen to come up on my 2019 TRD Sport, and it does indeed come up! Now, there is no option to change screen truck color because that was not an option on my 2019, but the diagnostic screen does come up. Unfortunately to me, none of it means anything, but for some reason, it makes me feel good to know I "got in there"!

I confirmed that this works on Canadian Tacomas, even though we don't have an off position on our light switch.

2019 and older dont have the option, we have the screen, but its pretty useless as its all diagnostics and no customizations.

Same here on my 2020 BR Limited. Did it in a semi-dark garage too. 3x between DRL OFF and AUTO did the trick for me after several failed attempts between AUTO and ON.

It’s the “Auto” setting from the touchscreen while in the view. In “Auto” it will switch when you get below 5 mph. It’s great when 4-wheeling and going between the tree branches.

Is there a way to get the camera to stay on at higher speeds? It would be really useful when coming up steep hills where you cant see over the hood.

Not that I know of. Unless there is a setting buried in the service menus and setups.
