I would assume it will be a little bigger. If my 3rd gen cab was like 1 foot bigger in the 2nd row it would be the perfect size. Luckily I only have my first kid on the way so won't need a bigger cab for a long time but we have a 3 row 4runner for longer trips.

Is the 4runner second row actually bigger or is it just perception? I've sat in the back of my buddies 4runner once or twice and I felt cramped and it felt the whole time if I sat up straight I'd hit the ceiling. I'm not entirely sure if I've sat in the back of my Taco since the test drive, I can't fully remember what that was like.

The 2nd row has plenty of room in the 5th gen, not cramped at all. A 6ft tall adult has plenty of knee and head space.

Huh I guess there's probably information out there somewhere on the actual dimensions, but until then it's just our opinions. My opinion was that it felt cramped and I'm only 5'11. In the end I don't ride around back there much so it's not incredibly important.

Hmm are you remembering correctly? In February I took a trip with some friends and we got a 4runner as a rental. Sat the entire trip all over Arizona in the second row behind the driver and I still had over a foot of extra knee space with driver seat most of the way back. I'm 6 foot.

Who knows! We're not going to solve second row first world problems tho, so I'm happy to concede.

IMHO Toyota has a pattern like all major car manufacturers do when it comes to new front end truck designs. They try it out on an SUV and see how they sell then they use a similar design for the trucks later. Next gen Tacoma will probably have a front end that looks like a RAV4 or Highlander.

Yes? Everybody keeps asking the question as if it’s never happened before. The Chevy nova certainly got smaller at one point.

It will probably be slightly bigger, or optimized for more "hip room" engines will be some form of turbo as well as hybrid, Tundra and Tacoma will share same engine options, possibly one other engine available for tundra.

Another was the Dodge Challenger in the 80s, it went from big to small back to big again.

I can just image the focus groups now, and it blows my fucking mind. A room filled with soft people, who want a soft truck with comfy warm things, first priority. Second priority- infotainment. It’s gotta be connectable to everything. Because THATS important in a truck. And it has to be bigger. Because instead of going out and buying the BIGGER option, why not make the smaller option ALSO bigger. So it can be bigger also...
    7F8FF3BA-B931-4F6C-89A5-E7B49592BCD3.jpg

Logic fail. But what do you expect from today’s truck buying demographic? A bunch of gentleman dandies. Sometimes they are the same people who have focus-group fucked the Toyota pickup into an “almost-minivan”, because even though they’ve fully domesticated, they still want that truck, so Toyota builds what will sell. Second row seating lol. I’m an 80s kid, and I’m witnessing the dumbest evolution of the pickup truck happen right in front of me. They want turbos because it’s not fast enough. Bigger engines because it doesn’t tow enough :rofl:it’s absurd. By the way some of the people here write, as far as what they want in a truck, next gen Tacoma is going to be a ford eco boost minivan.

FTR, The Toyota pickup was always slow. Always weak. Always small. And always dependable. That’s why it made a great option among others. They discontinued the one configuration that really mattered, and that they built their rep on.

In America 39.8% of adults aged 20 and over are obese. A compact truck cab would be a tight fit for a lot of buyers.

Indeed. So would you rather remedy that, or accommodate it? If they require more space, shouldn’t they just get a bigger truck, instead of making a smaller truck bigger?

Tons of people of all different sizes used the original Toyota pickup in the 80s, zero fucks given.

    Because of this:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downsize_(automobile)

That's not happening right now, so I don't think your example is relevant. The newer Dodge Darts are probably smaller than the ones from the 70s too, but like most if not all other examples - they took time off from making it.

Modern vehicles get smaller for two reasons:
1 - They aren't selling well and are mostly irrelevant (Mercedes EQC for example)
2 - The manufacturer is introducing a new model, and needs to make a larger size gap between vehicles (Hyundai downsized the Kona and Tuscon because of the Palisade)

Popular vehicles like the Tacoma stay relatively the same size or get bigger. So, unless Toyota all of a sudden decides to introduce the Hilux as the mid size truck and downsizes the Taco to fit on the K-series platform - I just don't see them downsizing at all.

Tht's why we keep asking the question. Not because it's never happened, but because it seems quite unlikely.

Note: Talking North America only here

I am 6ft2 and obese. I drive a Honda Fit as my shared/DD with the wife. They could make a smaller truck that big dudes can fit into easily.

The problem is the market wants 4 doors, and that equals the size of a taco. Would anyone really buy a less beafy version of this?

Nah. The question was asked, and then it was answered. With facts. What you think is or isn’t relevant...is um...you know. And if the question is “will it happen in the future?” The answer is “possibly”

    I think

I'm with you on this. Is why I went to a Frontier. Cheap, rugged, reliable, "small".

First choice would have been a 2nd gen 2.7L/5spd/4wd Tacoma but they are few and far between and expensive around here.
