Tacoma camper

Hey guys im new here to the board. I got my 06 tacoma over the summer. Haven't been able to put much money in it yet but what I have done is build a bed in the back for camping/hunting. I do have a nice tent set up for longer backpacking trips but come on who wants to sleep on the ground if you don't have to. Plus on the rainy nights it is a lifesaver. Let me know what you think.


Here is the frame. I had some lumber laying around so the price was right. I have a couple plastic containers for storage. I also keep a couple lawn chairs and a few blankets under there just in case.


I made it to everything just snaps together. It take 5 mins to put in or take out.


I took advantage of the ledge from my bed liner for a little extra support.


Here it is with the first part of the mattress. I covered a piece of ply with cotton batting then two layers of 2 inch memory foam mattress topper, then one more layer of cotton batting(its used for quilting my mom has tons) then I finished it with a heavy duty camo blanket i got for $10 from wal mart with a couple cans of scotch guard to top it off.





Here it is complete. There are two of the same size panels with the memory foam and then the third is the one closest. I think its only 8" or so wide. I use it on the tailgate to climb in. My mom used some heavy denim fabric we got for 2$ a yard for curtains. They are held up with velcro and you can see in the other images when they are not in use they velcro to the roof. I have one to block the cab and the camper shell back window. I plan on converting the camper shell light to leds pretty soon.

As you can see it get my dogs approval.

I thought it turned out pretty damn good and I think I spent around $70 total which was mainly the memory foam. I had most everything else laying around.

Thanks. I'm not sure its only 6ft long or so on the inside. Good thing im only 5'8".

 

You've got me thinking... I might have to go with this raised mattress concept.

I like the idea of being able to see out the windows. And I can always use more storage!

 

Nice work. If anyone wants to buy a sleeping platform I will be starting a thread to sell the one I made. I don't need it anymore now that I have a Flippac.

 

I've got a short bed. I used two 2x6 treated boards with 7/8 exterior chip board and then carpet on it. No padding. I couldn't make it too plush!!

 

Nice, I just camped in the back of my tacoma last weekend. Have a leer on it, didnt get around to making a platform yet, I have a small airmatress that is almost perfect fit back there. After staying in the back, I'm not sure if a platform is the best idea for me since I hit my head twice last weekend. But it did work well and I was the dryest in camp!

 

I did some thing very similar several years ago in my old Ranger, it was awesome for camping. I could store my gear and sleep nice and try. I really liked it during hunting season when everyone else was freezing their ass off in the tent I stayed nice and warm!

 

Storage is a plus. You could put gun cases and other gear underneath where it isnt visible.

Nice! I'm going to be doing something similar. I have the shorter bed though so I'll make it extendable with the tailgate down and buy one of these shell tents ($116 shipping included).

No. I tend to overbuild things. I'm going to add more because it will keep the plastic bins I use for storage from sliding around.
