Find a metal supplier that also deals with scrap. It’s way cheeper to lean with scrap couse it’s cheep. Around me it’s $.50 per lb for scrap

well yeah, but for a 3’ stick of it, you’ll maybe save $5 going to a metal supply store vs a hardware store and hardware stores are generally more accessible.

$12 for 3’ of 2”x1/8” at Home Depot

$12 for 20’ of 2”x1/8” from my metal supplier

I love Home Depot for a lot of things but damn they get ya on steel lol

Definitely a lot of factors come into play, like accessibility of steel store, local prices, how much you need, what you value your time at and convenience factor, etc. For me, I just buy my bar stock from the hardware store because the need is so infrequent, don’t need much, and the metal store isn’t too close. Plus I can pick up other stuff for other projects while I’m there.

Actually now that I think about it, my need for raw steel in general is pretty infrequent. Majority of the time I’m welding together a product like a shock relocate, or alignment tabs or something.

For sure I totally get where you’re coming from. Doesn’t make sense to spend the extra money in gas to go to the metal supplier when you can go pick up the thing you need from Home Depot 2 mins away. For me, I order a lot of metal and if I spend over $300 it gets delivered for free. All the stuff I got yesterday was $750 so I get free delivery haha. HD and HF kill me cuz you go in for one thing and come out with 10 different things lol

I like the over 300 free delivery. You mind sharing this business. I usually buy from bobco metals but ever since adding the camper it’s been a dread buying metal since the tubing are 20/24 footers. Gonna be building a gate soon

Oh way cool. Yeah, LACO steel. They’re in Paramount. They beat the prices of anywhere else I’ve gone to. You can either check them out online and call into their office or I can give you the managers phone number. We’re buddies.

on another note got my propane bracket welded and made brackets to existing bolt holes to not drill more holes into the camper. Need to find straps for it now

Id definitely buy the extended warranty. Miller and Lincoln are pretty nice to work with and usually treat their customers pretty well

there’s not a repair shop close, but my LWS will send it out for free if you buy the welder there to get fixed. Just a hassle to wait for the repair... luckily I haven’t had to do that with any of my machines

My steel shops are closed. Your internet supplier is still delivering if you do a $300 order? I wonder if I got a Michigan version? I'm dead in the water for projects ATM.

I wonder closed because no one showed up for work ?

Closed because the owners said good chance to cut overhead ??

Lack of Product to sell ?

Around here as of earlier this week deliveries still being made some are closed to walk in customers .

Same with welding distributors gates closed call the back door phone # pick up your order sign the invoice and go.

In LA the big steel suppliers like industrial metal supply are still open. Only for will call or deliveries. They offer free delivery for orders of a $100 or more. I was worried they were gonna close so when all this started I stocked up on dom, as well as made sure I had a few spools of welding wire and a few spare tanks of argon and c25. Wanted to be prepared to get some stuff done if work decided to send us home, also wanted to make sure my already scheduled builds went on as planned.

My boss man locked our doors and put a note on the door with our phone number. He was gone yesterday and text me and said let so and so in the back, he has some material to drop off. I never heard the guy knock.

Nah I’ve done it pretty recently. I just was a little rusty and forgot how shitty that stuff runs. Also should’ve done a wider root and did it in 2 passes with 3/32 rather than single. It’s a procedure for this shop. Wasn’t sure what code it would fall under.

Don't forget to disconnect your battery cable before welding on the body. Electrical components are at risk if you don't. Maybe not's so risky on an older LC, but still worth the time.

What's the hole for anyway? Just rust repair or you mounting something there? I see a Texas spare cover in the background. I thought most TX vehicles were rust free!
