Hope they are not planning to copy that front end for the Tacoma.

The Fronteir has a better cab design. The Toyota dealer here has three 2019 v6 4 wd Frontiers off lease, all fewer then 13 k, for $25k each.
that’s nearly $5k less then a Toyota comparibly equipped.
The cab duference is worth it and the v6 is compatible to the 4.0 in the 2nd gen. If I didn’t have a 2015 taco, I’d think long and hard about buying one.

Imo, This doesn’t mean the frames are the same size. The Larger one on the tundra can be extended and reinforcements added as needed. Wife’s Venza is based on the Camry chassis, but it is bigger and has added structural members where needed.

When I built my carport, we had a RAV and 4 Runner. The darn Tacoma sticks out more then a foot beyond because of added length. I hate it’s length, except when taking trips

I probably would have gone with a Frontier. Used Tacomas are overpriced. Frontiers have the fully boxed frame and they also seem to be less susceptible to rust.

But, Frontier doesn't offer 4x4 with 4 cylinder. I drive like a granny for fuel economy and the extra mpgs are important to me vs. the V6. So I paid way more than I should have for a 10 year old truck with 190k miles, because it's a Tacoma. I'm hoping that when I sell, someone else will pay me way more than they should, because it's a Tacoma :)

I prefer the frontier vs the 3rd gen i test drove

The fronty with a spacer lift and spc arms steers and handles a lot nicer than stock if you ever drive one

Yeah, my '06 Tacoma 4.0L Auto SR5 V6 had rust issues. It's part of what had me looking elsewhere. My Frontier has the 4.0L & 6spd manual, it's definitely way more power than I need. Not too bad on fuel as I drive slow too.

I miss my old 4 cylinder trucks. So simple to work on and you can drive them hard without using a ton of fuel.

What kind of fuel economy are you getting with the 4.0 and 6 speed, driving slowly? That's the drivetrain I would have wanted in a Frontier.

I would like to see the 4th gen Tacoma with access cab and a bit longer bed option, say 6.4'-6.7' and not any wider than it is now, More towing ability (low end power), 10 spd auto, bigger payload. I would also like to see a TRD Pro Tacoma with access cab 6 ft plus bed. Need to keep the Tacoma trail worthy and narrow like it is now, there is a reason mid size trucks sell so well, they do city parking so well, trail driving etc. First gen Tacomas were cool for the time but they would wear you out and beat you up, driving long distances, rough riding, etc. Very underpowered. I did tow a 17 ft outboard jet boat with my 88 4x4 for yrs fishing. I heard a Toyota future plans leak recently they are revamping and stripping down the Landcruiser to a true offroad vehicle like it was many yrs ago and will be for sale soon, probably to compete with Land Rover. Sounds like a lot of changes by 2023-24. I hope some good ones.

    ...stuff
how are they different... I believe I remember comparing frontier to a 2nd gen and they had an inch here and fraction of an inch there... differences were not enough to notice.

Its a king cab, long bed, Pro-4x.

    Short city trips = 16.5mpg
    Long highway trips = 22.5mpg
    Mixed driving = 18.5mpg

    I'm happy with it.

So...a full size? I don't think Toyota wants Tacoma sales to encroach on the Tundra.

Adding some length doesn't make a full size out of the current gen Tacoma. The 1st gens had a 7 ft bed for yrs. I owned three of them. I think you will see Tundra blossom into a larger full size vehicle than it is now by 2022. Personally I don't want to make the jump to full size due to mpg differences as well as city parking and driving is tight for full size.

Tacoma is not currently outstanding on payload specs, especially the trd offroad models, hope it catches up to Ranger in this respect at some point. I do quite a bit of offroad in Nevada every yr mining. Traveling to and from Nevada I am pretty maxed out payload wise, and tow a Yamaha rhino SXS along too, every nook and cranny of the truck is utilized packing for this trip, I stay a week at a time out in the outback of Nevada exploring and mining 20-60 miles off pavement. Lots of electronics, food, firewood, clothes, etc packed.

The current tacoma is the size of the original tundra. Last thing it needs is to get bigger. Could toyota get better at maximizing space with the current set up? Absolutely, but making it bigger for the sake of moving everything to get bigger is not the answer
