Is it a cycle that we just have to accept, or is it avoidable? It’s been happening like that for an awful long time.

Read up on Keynesian economic theory vs Austrian economic theory and you will see that as long as we maintain the current the course they will get more frequent and violent. Our fiat system is based off Keynesian theory. Probibly not the thread to argue the merits of either one but learning how the banking system and the fiat currency system works is kind of eye opening.

This is a morality and ethics thread, I think you’re in the wrong place.

    Going down another 30%!

In all seriousness I'm sidelined until after April to see what happens and if it gets as bad as they are predicting.

Not sure how I know this, but the ESG trend would be where that’s at.

    Pretty much!

That would devolve into a debate pretty quickly that would get stomped out.

It will be interesting to see how the market reacts to that news, thats a pretty big mental number (1mil). Then again I thought the bottom would fall out with the jobless claims and it wasnt THAT bad of a reaction.

My theory is that nobody knows the "real" unemployment number, so many people are furloughed/temp layoff, that they're hiding behind that as a "the numbers are inflated" thing.

That said, yeah I thought that would hit the markets more. Then again, forward looking - markets don't react to jobless now they look at Will they still have no job in a month. Which, they're thinking "no, they'll be back to work!" (maybe?)

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Let me be clear, I am not sure on the validity to this data. But as of 4/2 5:30 EST: 52855 deaths, 1,009,660 cases. (and, PS: 211,879 recoveries). 5.23% mortality rate

    https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2018-2019.html

Now, I'll use deaths and number of people who went to health care providers as a comparison: 0.2% seasonal flu in 2018-19 season. Reason being, there are probably cases of the flu that did not go to providers, and cases of COVID that did not go to providers, but the death:visit rate is worth comparing.

So far this is about on par/slightly worse than Alzheimer's.

It gets off track really quick.

I just listened to Dave Ramsey during a workout. I’m not a big fan, but like some of his stuff. He made a good point in this segment. He was discussing that we will learn a lot about our financial situation in times like this (or 2001, 2008, etc.) Thats what I have been trying to focus on. There’s a lot to my strategy that didn’t work so well. I won’t sell for a loss now, I’ll hang on, but I’ll be getting out of some things and into others if I get the opportunity. I have a 34 stock portfolio, and I knew that number was too high. I’ll be cutting a lot out and adding to what I knew was good all along. Should have done it in the beginning but it took this to learn. Quality is all that matters.

Loss selling isnt the end of the world if you write it off on your taxes.

I'm not sure if I should be hoping for my dividend ETF's to go back up or stay down where they are. The lower price means more shares when the dividend hits. But the portfolio value is down so that's a bummer. I'm not able to get to any of the money without early withdrawal penalty for another 5-1/2 years so I'm just reinvesting the dividends. In 5-1/2 years I should have around 50% more shares if prices stay low. I'm still down around $85K in value but still making around $2300 a month in dividends.
