So I was on Youtube today during work hours (shhhh!) and I stumbled across this guy who does some pretty random stuff, he has this video on gas mileage and the guy puts acetone in his tank, which supposedly increased his gas mileage by 10. What do you guys think?

Does your user's manual tell you to add acetone to the gas?

Acetone is pretty nasty stuff, I can't imagine what it would do to the internals of my truck. It may increase MPG but that cost savings will offset when your engine grenades.

I wouldn't do it. Here is a link to Snopes.com that says why not.

And no, I don't believe everything I read on the internet, but I've been visiting their site for a long time and they're usually pretty accurate.

Hope this helps in your decision.

Yea and it eats up nail polish, im definitely not going to try this. LOL

I love how people put up stuff they assume. Doesnt gas eat up rubber also??? Fuel lines arent just normal rubber. Try replacing your fuel lines with rubber hoses and see what happens.

I fully assume this isnt going to help gas mileage, but its funny to always see the comments that are so quick to stifle out of the box thinking. "its not in the manual", Im glad the original car maker didnt think, well this buggy isnt made to hold an engine, I better not do it.

FYI: I wasn't going to do this, and there are so many conflicting arguments... But the argument goes on!

I believe Acetone is less volatile than methanol and people use that to a degree for race cars and race bikes. So its not an insane idea. VOC, isnt that the rate it evaporates into the air? You know acids and caustics can evaporate very slowly, yet will eat up rubber and metal rather well.

Alright so up here in Alaska they add shit to the gas so it doesn't freeze. But what sucks is that you get worse mpg. My truck gets about 17 during the summer. In the winter it drops to 12/13. I've had some acetone is a plastic tub for a month and the only thing that has happened it that it evaporated. So if you only add 10% acetone to you gas tank I'm sure it won't eat your gas lines. So anything else. Now am I saying to this with every fill up? No I'm not. But I'm sure only doing it once or twice a month won't hurt anything.

I read quite a lot on this subject and it looks like it really works.
As far as water is concerned, you probably suck in tons of water during a storm or fog.Water is not an issue.Your local gas station is not void of water in their gas.

the dilution of 1 or 2 ounces is very minimal and several fuel additives have acetone in them and several products such as oil is made using acetone.
How many of you have used gas or alcohol or acetone to clean parts?? I have
I think this is the last thing "they" want to catch on

Sure it can peel paint ,but leave gas on paint for some time and it has the same effect- but gas evaporates slower
Mythbusters are kinda dicks and remember where they live ---san francisco, liberal central
