Large, large gains from Disney tanking a few weeks ago. They were put options so he bet that the price would go down over a period of time. He is infamous on reddit for making ridiculous money on stonks.

I have a 401k I've been working on for 21 years. I know what the number was a couple months ago and haven't wanted to look at it since. I have the option to put it all into a Stable Value Fund which would theoretically stop the bleeding. I think about doing that every day and then convince myself to just let it go as is. Anybody have experience with a Stable Value Fund?

I think in a year you’re not far off. It won’t be in a few months anymore like we were hoping for a few weeks ago.

means you have 20 years left or so right? Maybe closer to 10? Plenty of time to ride the wave back up. If you pull out now you’ll be costing yourself a loooooot of gains this far away from retirement.

Yeah I'm not going to panic I guess. Can retire 9/1/27 so I've got time. If we end up shooting at each other behind burned out cars in the future, I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

If I were you I’d say ride the wave back up, and then look at going to bonds and stable funds, this close to retirement.

exactly, if it doesn’t improve by then there won’t be much of a world to retire to anyway. If the markets get back to where they were and you are closer to retirement, that would be a good time to move things around to lower your risk.

Don't sell near the bottom. Amateur panic move.

The Buffet quote about losing money.........well I can tell you that SOB has lost a shit ton on paper, on STOR alone. But I doubt he is selling.....

    Exactly.

Folks still own the same # of shares as they did two months ago.

Losses only exist once you sell those shares.

If you can't look at the "value if sold today" figures then it's best to walk away and come back later.

I've been in the market for enough of these cycles that I'm not bothered -- again, the losses don't become real unless you sell something.

Now is the time to be buying.

I'm mostly lurking in here, but I did the same over a month ago. I think I went from 7 to 10%.

    Good move.

One of the relatively few smart things I did in my early 20's was to ensure I had a 10% retirement contribution. Figured if I didn't see it, I wouldn't miss it. And I didn't.

Though I didn't make a lot back then, twenty+ years of compound growth and it's a bunch of money I wouldn't otherwise have waiting for me for retirement (likely in a couple decades)

I've been keeping my Roth at 15% and traditional at 5%. Employer matches the first 5% but it goes into traditional. That money is able to buy A LOT more these days. LOL.

I wished I would have when I was in my 20's... :anonymous:

My employer does direct contribution, instead of matching.

Looks like March 23rd was the lowest point for most ETFs. Did I miss it? Is now the time to buy and hold long term?

I was lucky enough to have a father who instilled some basic financial literacy, as well as hammering home the bit about living within my means.

Generally my employers have done matching of some for other, and I've always ensured I at least got their full match.
