I would like someone out there with an engineering degree and machine shop to fabricate an accessory to attach to the rear end of a bed rack to keep my dogs from jumping or gear from falling out of the rear of the truck...I found two bed racks I like that could easily have this as an add on but the manufactures do not seem to be interested...I have a SnugTop shell and a DECKED...The DECKED is just a few inches from the top of the tail gate so my dogs and gear could fall out of the back of the truck going up a rough trail...If a bed rack ever came out with a locking, removable plate or bars I will replace my shell for a bed rack.181121_12;00;59.jpg 190412_10;51;22.jpg beavertail-moose_200221_13;23;29.jpg

Viable light weight option . I kinda drew a blank when the request for an engineer was made

I'm not thinking I would keep my little dogs in the back with just a bed rack either or I may have missed something. With what OP has just shut the tail gate and window and all is secured

    OK OP if you w
ould be kind enough to straghten us out I believe jay and I are both a little confused. You already have the drawer system and a cap. These will ecure evrything very well. From what I read you would like to switch to a bad rack and would like some one to make basically a gate for the rear of it so when you have gear back there it cant fall out? Am I correct so far? I believe, the part that is throwing us off, is the having your dogs back there. I can't find any good way for dogs to travl in the rear unless they are perhaps stored in crates and tied down.

Does op want to ditch the shell and just have a large bed rack/ cage that will secure everything and allow the tail gate to be kept in the down position. Like a large jail cell on a taco???

Hell, you could prob find a side piece of wire grating from an old dog kennel or something that would fill the gap sufficiently. Rough out with a zip disk. Attaching it in place would be the only minorly tricky bit depending on how you wanted to do it.

I *think* he is looking for something like this, but for the back. Those Decked systems defeat the inset point of a truck bed, so there nothing containing dogs and gear from falling over the rail

I’d be damned though if I put my dog back there especially to travel but that’s me. Either way all speculation until OP clarifies

Honestly, this would be the easiest solution though. Just hem some buckles on the top and sides, make some straps for the cage with the opposing buckle piece, add some clips to the bottom to attach to the d-rings. Seals all 4 sides and makes a fairly sturdy setup. Hell I may go do that in mine for a kinda related project I have been cooking up.

For a short wheeling trip with other people in the cab, I might. But for any length of travel, heck no. My dog is treated better than most of my friends.

For gear it would be handy though, esp the way my friends pack.

Wow a lot of responses and suggestions, thanks...I have to figure out what kind of bed rack to get first...The shell will be installed on the truck in the winter and bed rack on in the summer...With the sliders open the dogs have access from the cab to the bed of the truck...I took both drawers out of the DECKED to be able to store more gear underneath, any other loose gear would be tied down...I see people letting their dogs ride in the back of open bed trucks a lot so I thought this might be a good idea...In the summer time I would like to have the bed rack to be like a cage for my dogs so they can travel in or out of the cab without falling or jumping out...It also would give them fresh air and relief from the summer heat if I'm at the mall...The grey poodle loves to ride in the back...I drove all the way up to Prudhoe Bay and Lake Powell one year with my two dogs stuffed in the cab, I would like to change that up around a little bit next time.

The decked system takes a lot of depth out of the bed. For the dogs, especially since they’re small like mine. I couldn’t even imagine that unless the whole bed was surrounded by something with holes in it too small for them to fit through. I wouldn’t even take them to the mall either but that’s just me

Get one of those backyard cages that fold out into a hexagon (or whatever) and cut as needed, then anchor it wherever you can on the rail system.
