Replacing Rear Axle Stud

I was replacing my rear axle seal and managed to forget my right from left, and over tightened a stud snapping it in half. Can I get this out myself or something I need a shop to do? I was thinking of drilling it out and then pulling a new one through like a wheel stud.

Looks like it's pressed in. I think drilling it out would work... or even a bit of heat and a BFH and once it's flush a punch.

 

That’s a good idea. I have an oxy acetylene torch so I could get that nice and warm.

 

Yeah that didn’t work. I just noticed too I can introduce a little bit of play by hand so I’ll just go ahead and have this totally disassembled and new bearing and whatnot all pressed on.

Unfortunately, my powertank is empty and I don't have a compressor otherwise I would have tried that.

 

Oh em GEE that OEM bearing assembly is expensive. $322

 

If the seal leaked, it washed the bearing grease out of the bearing. You need to replace the bearing.

 

In case anyone is wondering, $370 for all new OEM parts. Bearing, studs, all that other little bullshit. Have a mechanic buddy who will do the work for $50.

I wonder if you can get a NSK bearing from somewhere.

I always thread the nut on upside down. Stopping just before the threads come through the nut. Then hammer the nut. Doesn't take much effort with a few pounds hammer.

 

I know you bought the parts already, but the Timkin rear bearing assembly uses a Koyo bearing and is roughly $110 shipped to your door from RA. It's what we installed in my truck.

 

Did that come with the reluctor in the bearing for the ABS sensor to work?

Years ago when I replaced mine with the Timkens, they did not.

 

No, the ABS ring is a separate piece on the axel. It can be reused, but I do reccomend a new bearing retainer and snap ring. Now, front wheel bearings need the built in tone ring.

 

This is what I'm buying. Bearing assy was about $320 and the other little shit $45 or so.

 

Have a picture of a tone ring not integrated, for the rear bearing? I am curious to see that.
