like others have said, 09+ lost the TPMS and i believe the 05's and maybe some 06's have alloy wheels for spare's. All other year models have the classic black spare.

I would assume it was phased out due to cost saving's...pretty much like everything else.

I found out there is a sensor on the spare when my light came on, but all 4 truck tires were properly inflated.
My spare had gone down enough to trip the sensor light on the dash.

    My 05 doesn't have an alloy :(

To the OP, this does make sense, in our Audi's my wife drove, they chewed through tires like crazy (15,000 to 20,000 max). They came with the matching wheel/tire, I always rotated the spare through to get the extra mileage.

However, without a matching wheel/tire, it just doesn't work..

I thought that with the newer radial type tires that you kept the tires rotating in the same direction, when rotating the tires using the H pattern rather than the old X pattern. That being the case, if you add the fifth wheel (spare) , onto which side are you going to use it? Does it matter than if one has a flat and has to install the "spare" which might now be revolving in the opposite direction than originally run?

Thanks for all of the inputs.

As an old timer, before space saver spares, we always had spare tires with the same rim. They were not directional and could be put on either side and front/back. So to even out wear, you had a five tire rotation that moved the both to the left and right, as well as front and back. Most high speed tires you see now are directional and can't be switched from one side to another. I don't think most truck tires are directional. There is also a movement for car tires to become non-directional again, just to get more wear out of the tires.

With spare tires becoming obselete, I can see five tire rotations becoming history. But non-directional tires do allow you move tires to both sides to even out the wear so you get to use the tires longer.

interesting, i might be getting confused with the frontiers...their first design year had alloy spares, but not the newer models.
