My stock clutch setup has made it to 144k and now the throwout/release bearing is squeaking -- time to look for a replacement kit and flywheel.

A similar thing happened to me in my '86 Turbo Coupe in the wintertime, except that the clutch cable had snapped. I was able to rig up a temporary cable while the car sat on the shoulder of a highway on-ramp, and I nursed the car home mostly by shifting via engine speed matching.

I hit 250k on mine and it still had a lot life left. The carrier bearing had been squeaking since about 60k. But had the motor out so just went ahead and replaced CB and Clutch.

Lifespan should be closer to 200K, right?

What's with all the zombie threads here lately. Some low count poster (WineDrinker) jumps in a 2 year old thread and acts like it's some ongoing conversation. Then another low count poster jumps into a 5 year old thread (RDC) and revives it again.

^^^^ don't need 27 how long will my clutch last threads. One does the trick. Tee hee..

    Anyways

What are the things you feel when a clutch goes bad?

    146k miles
    Smoked once by the woman
I'm currently getting a shaking hood in 1st as it winds up. Shift into second at 15mph and the shake is gone.

Clutch is defiantly worn. Engages near the top of the pedal.

Guess i should just replace it and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.

    Rolling up on 149k

Shake is gone. Dumb story. Accidently popped the spring off that works the star adjuster.. Fast forward several months and shake showed up.. Fast forward a month to when i replaced the brake shoes and discovered the adjuster fell off. Put new pads on, adjusted them and broke them in on a 500 mile road trip.

Shake is now gone. I suspect the right shoes were getting hung up the drum as the left shoozed retracted more than they should due to lack ofnproper adjustment related to the missing adjuster.

The drive to 250k moves on

Having mine replaced today. 182,000. Never towed anything with it. Had a few heavy loads in the bed. Bought the truck new in 07 so I've put every Mile on it.

Just b/c the throwout bearing is squeaking does not mean you need to replace your clutch. You'll find plenty of people who drive with those symptoms and none related to a worn clutch that needs replacement.

I'm curious as well. Starting off in 3rd instead of first will kill a clutch. Riding the clutch pedal will too. Upshifting so you're out of the power band, not so much imo.

175k and still had plenty left.
Did clutch fork bearing and rear main seal.
    Replaced with the aisin brand.
    That’s what was in it.
After seeing it I was in the fence but had new.
Resurfaced flywheel it’s been good can’t say I really notice much difference.

Average use figure about 100k but the well known T/O bearing service bulletin had a lot of folks going inside way earlier. I bought a used 2006 X Runner with chirpy sound at 92k miles. I’m 4th owner and the truck has not been pampered. Checking records the flywheel had been resurfaced at around 60k but that may be all they did. I resurfaced again, replaced rear main, T/O bearing, clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder and pilot bearing. But wish I’d used URD kit which is much heavier duty and features a stainless steel sleeve to go over the quill. The quill is the weak link and causes problems later on like not getting full engagement because the bearing wears into the soft aluminum. Don’t take my word for it ck it out. Also don’t forget to ck and set pedal free play. I’m at 143k and can feel the bearing hanging up on the quill again. Next will do it right. If the quill breaks you’ll need another tranny case.

When I made that statement, I was thinking back to my experiences with big displacement bikes - both wet and dry clutches. In extreme cases, I've seen people killing clutches when they were in too high a gear before getting all the way thru a red light coming off a stop.
Perhaps my experience does not apply to 2nd Gen Standard Shift trucks.

That said, when I was driving std. shift - car or truck - I always had what I felt was sufficient speed before moving to the next gear.
