Here's somthing I didn't know about lug nuts

Cant find what doesnt exist. At about 75,000 combined miles on 2 trucks with these wheels with no issues.

Damifino. Aftermarket wheels came on my used truck. After rotation I had vibration. Several balances later at a different shop that sold these wheels, shop guy said try new lug nuts. They have a short shank inside of the taper. they helped a lot. The wheels are not hub centric. I then got a set of rings, made no difference. I still have a very slight vibration on some roads, a certain speeds. It ain't much.

Hub-centric wheels are normally found on all factory-made vehicles. Automakers will design their OEM wheels to fit a specific vehicle or range of vehicles using a specific wheel bore size. This wheel bore is engineered to fit exactly onto the axle of a given vehicle, creating a hub-centric connection. A hub-centric connection is where the center of the wheel is connected directly to the axle hub. Lug nuts are used here to connect and secure the wheel to the mounting plate. In a hub-centric design, the wheel-to-axle connection actually bears the weight of the car as well as the forces acting on the wheel upwards and downwards. Lug nuts are used to withstand the lateral forces while the car is in motion that push and pull the wheel to and away from the mounting plate.

A great deal of aftermarket wheel companies make wheels that have a center bore with a larger hub diameter in order to fit a wide range of vehicles. If the hub diameter is too small for a larger axle, it will not fit the given vehicle. So, aftermarket companies will often create large hub diameters to ensure that their wheels can be used for a larger variety of applications. Due to the larger size of the wheel’s hub diameter, there is empty space between the axle and the hub. This means that the wheel is centered by the lugs instead of the hub, making the fitment lug-centric.

 

Mine came with fn wheels.

Mine swelled awhile back. The tire shop gave up and had me come and get my truck. I used a beater 6-pt socket and got them off and ordered solid ones from a vender. (Gorilla?). Zero issues since. The OEM ones are not built to last.

 

I had this problem on my buddies Dodge. I had to file the lug down and put on a different size socket and it came off. what a bitch.

 

Not just Toyota. When I bought new tires for my F150 in November the shop told me they wouldn't touch my truck until I bought new lug nuts. I didn't order anything fancy, but AutoZone had some solid SS lug nuts in stock. I'd advise anyone with this style lug nut to just buy new ASAP and not wait until they are bad.

They had no trouble getting my old ones off, but wouldn't guarantee they would go back on. This was just my 2nd set of replacement tires, the original lug nuts had only been off the truck once since leaving the factory.

 

I know Fords been using that style lug nut for decades. My '87 ranger had them and I had to replace them after a few years. The metal cap came off leaving you with odd size lug nut. I don't understand how they could be any less expensive to manufacture because you're adding steps to the manufacturing process.

 

I've had swollen nuts in the past.

Had to replace a couple on my wife's minivan. I always spray a little WD-40 down inside the nuts when I have them off. It seeps into the space between the nut and the SS wrap, keeping them from rusting and swelling. We keep our vehicles for a long time and haven't had a problem with swollen nuts in years!

 

I have found that slightly smaller 13/16" wrenches do less damage on stainless-wrapped 21mm lug nuts. Of course they won't fit if there's rust under the stainless, and some are just too snug to slide on and off easily. 13/16" = .812", 21mm = .827"

 

Had to beat a socket onto the ones on my wife's Ram 1500. And then trouble getting them out of the socket. Luckily only a few had swelled up. Replaced with solid ones.

 

mine did that on my 2011. it was a real pain in the ass. i didnt have a socket that fit so i just bought new lugs and took it to a shop for a rotation and asked them to put the new ones on when the old ones came off. i figure they have more tools than i do.

 

Yep it's some fucking bullshit, I replaced mine with some solid ones a couple months ago.
It seems to be a trend across the board for auto manufacturers, at Ford we have the exact same issue, but I've noticed Chevy and Dodge lug nuts that are the same way.
I assume there a few company's who make lugs for factory's and they do this to save pennies that all add up into a hugh fuck load of pennies.

 

Do any of them hang lower?
