South Korea's return to normal interrupted by uptick in coronavirus cases

    Grace Moon

South Korea has been held up as a paragon for containing the coronavirus, lauded by the world for successfully flattening its curve, it is now bracing for a possible second wave.

But two worlds have emerged in South Korea. In one, everyday life resembles something closer to normal: There are lines outside restaurants during lunchtime; streets are busier; some wear masks and some do not.

The other world, however, keeps its eye firmly on the slight daily uptick in the country's number of cases.

Despite methods like early testing and digital tracing, South Korea is bracing itself for a second wave of infection. The government recently pushed back the new school year, opting for April 6 as the start date. Despite efforts to protect children from being infected with the coronavirus, over 83 percent of South Korea's hagwons — cutthroat test prep centers for students — remain open.

With many parts of the world wondering what a slow return to normal life will look like, South Korea's situation offers a warning: The curve doesn't necessarily stay flat.

"Possible second wave"? Pffffff. This is a widespread virus. There will be a second wave & a third wave & a fourth wave & so-on until it's done wiping out the weak. It has to run it's course. Social distancing, masks, gloves, whatever won't stop it from running it's course, only interrupt it's process. It'll weed out the weak, that's it's one purpose. Go about your life & get treatment if you get sick. Everything else is futile.

Don’t be upset if no one attends your funeral.

Unfortunately this virus isn’t weeding out the dumb. You do you; I’m doing everything possible to NOT get it.

You're going to get it, if you don't already have it. I know much more about this than you & am around it every day @ work. Quoting this so I can say "I told you so" after this all pans out.
The ONLY benefit to social distancing is to slow down the infected rate so EMS & hospitals aren't overwhelmed all @ once. It's doing NOTHING to prevent people from ultimately getting it.
It would take the entire world, EVERY SINGLE PERSON, to quarantine for 14-21 days to stop this virus. No way in hell that'll happen so it'll continue to spread until it's killed who it's gonna kill, make sick who it's gonna make sick & not do anything to people it doesn't affect. To believe anything other than is stupid.
When a vaccine is finally created (@ least 3 months from that), only then will it get controlled.
You're doing everything you can to NOT get it? So you haven't left your house in over 2 months? Didn't think so. :jerkoff:

“Go get treatment” doesn’t work when there’s no remaining treatment capacity available for you.

That’s the point of all the shutdowns.

To slow down infection rates to what hospital capacities can handle.

yup. Good info, though it’s stuff much of the public wouldn’t be able to “handle” if that’s what the officials told them.

Me? I’m kinda hoping to make it until vaccine availability but know that’s a crapshoot.

Since I have exercise induced asthma, I’m minimizing any going out to roughly once a week grocery runs. Probably less after yesterday mornings run. I’m fortunate to work a job that I can do remote - my company is on full WFH another month at least.

Thankfully I also live where drive thru window liquor stores exist.

Dont play with fireworks when someone is stealing gas.

Edit: forgot to post the text for those who dont want to follow the link.

EUGENE, Ore. -- A raging fire broke out late last night at the U-Haul on River Road, but police say the story behind how the fire got started is even flashier than the flames themselves.

Sgt. Stotts, with Eugene Police Department, said this all started with a dispute between a man and a woman in the U-Haul parking lot.

Stotts said the man was in a vehicle and threw a lit firework at the woman standing outside the vehicle, while she ducked for cover, the firework burst into sparks and the man drove away.

Unbeknownst to the man and woman, a thief was underneath one of the other U-Hauls stealing gas.

Sparks from the fireworks flew near the gasoline and four of the U-Hauls burst into flames with the thief catching on fire as well.

The gasoline thief and the woman both ran from the scene, with the thief running away with his pants and sleeve on fire.

Police said once they arrived the owner of the U-Haul showed up, and was able to pull the security footage which depicted the scene described above.

Stotts said the footage was clear enough for them to see the license plate of the man who threw the firework, and they were able to arrest the man at his home nearby before the fire was completely cleared.

"He's been charged with reckless endangering, criminal mischief, and I believe those are it for right now," said Stotts.

As for the gasoline thief, the police were not able to locate him.

They did speak to the woman who the man threw the firework at but police said she did not want to be involved further in the investigation.

Two of the U-Haul vehicles were a total loss out of the four that caught on fire.
