I just wanted something to hold me over till all this staying at home stuff is over but I’m too stubborn to run lower settings. I suppose I can use the Xbox for games and the PC for work and porn.

Yea I remember building computers for more than half my life. Then I got interested in cars and trucks which pretty much occupied my money and time from there on out. Got tired of all the games just being ported over from consoles.

The 480 is over a decade old at this point. The Xbox 360 was still top dawg for systems graphics back then and the Xbox One was in prototype. Since then the Xbox One has received two refreshes and, to be honest, the launch version can't even handle most games at 1080P/30fps anymore.

The 480 was good for about three years and playable for about double that, roughly the same lifespan as a good console. It had a good run but asking for a card to stay relevant for a decade isn't realistic.

Not overspending right now is a good plan. No one knows what this pandemic will look like in a few months. I just read that an Asian family in Texas was almost stabbed to death in broad daylight and that the Secret Service has to protect the Surgeon General beacause people are stupid. Crazy times.

My current machine. Had the power supply sitting around, but bought most everything else. Even my old case was falling apart, so it was time to build another.

    I started with this:

    upload_2020-4-3_10-19-46.jpg

    And it turned into this:

    upload_2020-4-3_10-21-20.jpg

Some good stuff, some "middle of the road" stuff. Definitely not a top of the line gaming computer, but one that should last a few years.

My CPU shipped overnight from Cali and will be here today, the thermal paste I ordered 30 minutes later also shipped overnight from TX and will be here tomorrow, hopefully I’ll have a functioning tower tomorrow afternoon.

Not too bad. I went with a "mid-size" tower because I really didn't want a full size. Everything fits, so I'm OK. I added one optical drive which I don't see in the before or after pictures...lol

I have a evga gtx 970 that I don’t need anymore. It has a nzxt kraken cooler on it with a corsair h50 all in one cooler. It is 4 ish years old so I am not sure if the h50 is still good or not, it has been sitting for a few years in my closet now. I do have the stock cooler as well. Id be willing to get rid of it all for $50 if you want it.

This thread is making me want to build another system. Maybe a mini ITX or something.

I’ll just keep playing War Thunder and save money. I see they are still updating and keeping that game alive.

Heh thanks...I’m asian too. Even more reason to...never go outside for social purposes ever again.

Hmmm. This might be nice just to get these loud 480’s out.

I always liked the small builds. I had a mATX build moons ago when ITX boards were a bit difficult to come by. Nowadays there’s even more stylish ITX cases out.

Most of my builds have been mid-tower setups. The last couple cases I bought were Fractal. I love the design and quality of their cases. I think if go the mini-ITX route, I'd go for the Fractal 202 case:

Yes indeed. I ran this setup when I wanted super quiet and all water cooling. It worked well for 1080p. Once I went to 1440p I bought my gtx 1080 since I knew the 970 wouldn’t hold a steady 144 fps on 1440p for the games I was playing at the time.

I got my 3600 installed, flashed the BIOS, had to remove the registry folder for Ryzen master and then reinstall it, and after some tweaking and about 2 hours of gaming I'm comfortable saying my system is back to 100%.
Ran Cinebench R20 and got a score of 3492, CPU temps didn't go above 80 and it held a steady clock of 3.95 Ghz throughout the test, it seems my limitation is EDC and PPT.

I'd be surprised though if the 3600 hits equilibrium during the Cinebench test. It's not long enough.

Believe I would go the mini itx route if I were to do it over again.
I Just like the small form/minimalistic look.

Ran folding at home for 3 hours and CPU temp stayed around 85 at 3.8-3.9Ghz, GPU stayed around 60, I’d call it good for not having all the fans installed (I have room for one more intake and one more exhaust), I’m curious to see if the thermal paste “breaking in” and working a little better after a few days of use is a myth or not.

Also, my folding at home local client isn’t working right, I have no control over it once I click on the shortcut to start it, the GUI just refreshes every 2-3 seconds and doesn’t make any changes to the settings.

Are you using Chrome to see the web GUI? It doesn't work and will just crash and refresh for ever. For some reason opening the GUI in incognito mode seems to work but is pretty annoying. Firefox works without doing anything funny.
