A/C compressor not turning when the motor is running.

Correct. If the clutch is not engaged, it serves as an idler pulley.

 

OK, finally had some time to check a couple of things on the A/C today. I did mark the pulley on the compressor and it is spinning. ( feel dumb for not thinking it was spinning) The clutch is not engaging when I put the A/C on, so I did the easy things like change the MG relay and A/C fuse. Still not engaging. Then I thought I would check the receiver/dryer window to see if there was any R134 in the system. Well as you all probably know there is no receiver/drier on a 2009 Tacoma or( I can’t find it). What should I check next?

 

You can check to see if you have any refrigerant by depressing the schrader valve needle with a small screwdriver. If its "spritzes", you have some refrigerant. Only try this with the large tube/pipe, it's the low pressure side.

 

Low on refrigerant. There is a low pressure switch that keeps it from turning to keep you from trashing the system.

 

Someone that knows what they are doing. Sorry to be so blunt, but JFC! Have some one put a set of gauges on it.

 

...or that ^ when all else fails...

 

There is no sight glass. They disappeared when receiver / driers were replaced by accumulators, in the early '90's by most marquees.

Not being rude, but your next move is to get a pro with a full set of r134a gauges to check it out.

 

Don't sweat it. Not all of us are experts on every facet of these trucks. As many have mentioned, you have reached the apex of DIY knowledge. Either barter with a homie, or pay a shop to find the culprit. Do it now before swamp ass season!

Thanks for all the advice I guess it will be time to have the professional take a look. Figured it was worth asking the question on this site before having the pros take a look. Will keep you posted.

What?! All five of my Toyotas - Tacos and 4Runners - have a sight glass. Including my '20. Want me to post up some pics?

Pics please. I haven't seen a sight glass in years, and my taco doesn't have one.

 

Well I'll be damned. I've got to halfway retract my comment. Someone explain why only 4Runners have sight glasses? My '08 had one nearly front and center when you popped the hood, and below you'll see a pic of my '20 - which even has a dedicated sight hole in the radiator cover. I ran out and checked my daughter's truck (the silver one in my sig) from firewall to condenser and there's no sight glass. I should have checked before commenting. Sorry guys!

 

Well huh, that sure is a sight glass. I didn't believe you but now I do. Sight glasses went away years ago with manufacturers going to orifice/accumulator systems. My '10 Taco has a receiver drier and an expansion valve, no sight glass. The only way I can properly charge it is to empty it, then weigh in the freon. And at full charge and idle, the LP runs 55psi. That's about 60f at the evaporator. Which means it doesn't cool for shit. Run the rpm at 1500 and LP drops to 40-45 and cools great. The compressor just doesn't pump fast enough at idle.

 

And if you're familiar with 4th gen 4Runners, the grill comes up with the hood. Right there on the left hand side is a block with the schrader valve and sight glass. So I wonder why 4Runners have them and Tacos don't? Very odd.

 

I wonder too, and what is the charging procedure on it. Does it involve the sight glass?

 

Nah, I've got the manifold and gauges and always charge using high/low pressures per ambient temp. To be honest the sight glass is useless.
