Looking at buying a used tacoma and wondering what the best model years are to look at and if theres anything I should be aware of in regards to mechanical or paint issues on any of the models? I've heard 2016's arent the best mechanically and know that the white paint on most years is susceptible to chipping.

They are all good, I would base your decision on features as they have small differences.

Everyone knows that the best Tacoma year is my truck’s year. While I am at it, my model is the ONLY model you should buy and color, pfffhhh, my color is the best!

    LOL TacoTime

My opinion is purely based on available options. That being said the new 2020 would be my pick. I do realize you are looking for used though. I know some could care less for the power seat or the apple car play but its why I bought a 2020 over a 2019. Ultimately it just comes down to what you want and what kind of deal you can get on it.

    Oh and Welcome to TacomaWorld!!

I keep hearing this myth occasionally. Some had a bad CPS, big deal.
16s mechanically are the same truck as 17 18 19 etc.
Nothing has changed actually but minor addons.
Just update the software with the tsb.
16s have zerks, bed cubby etc., later do not.

    Still thinking about it.
I bought a 2015 and I kind of like the fact that it's the 11th year of that model, so maybe it's the most perfect 2nd gen lol. I don't know.

19s and 20s share the same software updates In the ECU as far as transmission and engine mapping

2063, when its fully electric with 1000 miles per charge. 2,000 pounds of torque. Solar charged. And on 37s from the factory. I'm a time traveler :notsure:

Not for 19 and 20. 1.05 has been considered not safe to use by OVTune for 2019 so they took that away and said not to use it. The Beta is the only thing that’s available and it has a early shift issue and there’s no noticeable difference in performance since Toyota fixed those issues with an update to the engine and trans mapping in 2019.
    Patiently waiting for 2.0 Final!

If I was going to a 3rd Gen I’d look for a low miles 2017 Offroad.

I second that. Each model year has subtle differences. 18 and up come with TSS (safety sensors and dynamic cruise control). I'd go with the newest, lowest mileage one out there you can find within your budget, and personally would choose lower mileage over model year

so the trans mapping for the newer 2019 and 2020 is different from the older gen3?

is this upgrade available for the older gen3?
