    Hello,
I have a 2013 v6 with 75,000 miles. I’ve recently noticed that when I start it it lets out a little white smoke and I get the heavy smell of fumes. For instance, if my truck is setting outside the garage and I jump in it and start it up...I see a little puff of smoke come out. When I pull it into the garage and shut it off, I get the overwhelming smell of exhaust fumes (outside the cab, not inside). Almost like it’s running really rich.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Have the spark plugs ever been changed? May or may not be your issue, but the factory recommends replacement every 30k.

thank you. Would the spark plugs cause the overwhelming exhaust fumes odor? Honestly, I’m not sure if they’ve ever been changed. Guess I’ll buy new spark plugs now. thanks for the advise.

I’d check spark plugs perhaps you’ve got a bad 02 sensor see if there is any codes stored.

If you have noticed it with the change in temp along with no driveability issues or CEL, I would say that it's normal.

That is hard to say if it will help much, maybe someone will chime in but I would start with plugs because you are past due. Check air filter and clean MAF and throttle body might be next if the plugs don't fix everything.
While you are at it, make sure to get the exact plugs referenced in your owners manual. NGK LFR6C-11 or Denso K20HR-U11. Nothing else.

If you start it up just to move it, and shut it off in the garage, yes you'll get some fumes because it's still cold and running rich.

Also, just a few times in the past, I've started my wife's minivan in the morning and it ran rough for just a few seconds. It never threw any codes and made us kind of look at each other like, "Oh crap, what's wrong with your beloved Sienna?"

Then I thought back and realized I'd started it the night before and only ran it for a few seconds to pull it into the garage or something like that. I can only assume it dumped a little too much fuel into the cylinders, causing a little stumble or hiccup on start up.

And, like someone else questioned, how long has it been since you've changed your plugs or air filter?

thank you. I’m ordering spark plugs right now because I’m not sure if they have ever been changed. Also, yes, I haven’t driven the truck much at all lately so maybe just starting it up and moving it back and forth from the garage has something to do with it. Been locked up in the house with shelter in place so haven’t drive anywhere in at least 3 weeks. I also ordered a new MAF sensor as well. Thank you for the advise.

No check engine light and truck seems to run fine, just happen to notice the overwhelming smell of fumes and puff of white smoke. Also, I’m not super mechanically inclined so I’m not familiar with how to check a code. I can change spark plugs, oil and maybe a few other easy repairs but that’s about the extent of my knowledge. Thank you for the advise.

You probably don't need a new MAF. MAF can be cleaned with MAF cleaner spray. But do buy a new air filter if it hasn't been changed in a long time also.

Thanks for the info. How do you feel about iridium plugs...still avoid? I checked the Denso k20hr-u11 and Amazon says they don’t fit my 2013 Tacoma 4.0L. However the NGK LFR6C-11 does fit. I know Amazon isn’t an actual mechanic but I’m sheltering in place so I’m trying to have everything shipped to me. Thanks for the advise.

thanks. I just figured I’d go ahead and replace the MAF sensor rather than clean it. I ordered a new air cleaner as well. thanks for the advise.

Forgive my ignorance but would the CEL be on if there were a code? Also, any recommendations for a particular code reader? Thanks for the advise.

It should of, you can goto autozone and they can scan it they have a basic scanner but can check/clear codes.

Amazon doesn't know. Both of these plugs are listed in your owners manual as well. I personally wouldn't use any other plugs, even if people online post good results with other plugs.

Now the weird part, if you remove the plugs and see that you have 3 NGK on one side, and 3 Denso on the other, this is normal from the factory. You don't need NGK on one side and Denso on the other. There are different theories on why Toyota does this. I believe Toyota does this to show that they think NGK and Denso are both of good quality, as a way of showing respect to these suppliers.

well, since I’m adhering to our current shelter-in-place order, I can’t really go anywhere. I’ll order a code reader from Amazon, was just hoping to get a recommendation for a particular brand/model. Thank you.

Sorry I don’t have any real experience with them I’ve got a cheapo from harbor freight it works decent and a Scangauge 2 I use now that reads/clears codes.

My 2015 does it also. Spoke with my mechanic( Toyota Master mechanic) just has someone mentioned in an earlier post, it’s running rich right at start up cause it’s cold.

yes, someone mentioned that asa well. In all the years I’ve owned this truck, just never noticed it before. But yes, could be because of not driving much. Thank you.
