I'm somewhat dreading, but also looking forwards to saving up for the haltech and really making this engine perform.

Ah, that may have helped me yesterday. I spoke with somebody in sales regarding the lack of mls headgasket thinking "there's no way they don't have one." I was informed they don't, and they also had no info on the possibility of cams for the 'ol girl either.

 

The decks between the two blocks are the same, if I remember correctly. The timing cover area is where it the difference is. Again, going off of old memories.

I am sure there are pictures of some 2tr heads and block decks, which can be compared to the 3rz components.

 

Like we say in the off road world, underpower over axle creates a machine with more reliability and strength and ability. The problem with performance is that when you increase it you decrease dependability in most cases. But what you're doing is right on par. A good episode to watch is when i believe it was industrial injection when they built a million mile cummins.

I had a shop quote me $1200 to completely tune my engine, does that sound fair?

 

Tune your engine, meaning tune the Ecu? Or go through and do head work or what?

Did they just give you a number or break it down at all? I would assume $100/hr for the dyno plus the tuners time.

 

No details, just said a full tune. He said he'd need it for 3 days. It's a performance shop with inhouse dyno. A buddy at work said he paid $1500 in Japan for full tune so said that was a good deal, thought I'd check what you guys thought.

 

Hmmm seem a little high if you're talking about dyno tuning. Judging by your past posts your engine is pretty well put together so i would lean toward you're talking about a tune.

And the posts followed by the one i quoted did not populate. I would shop around. Most tuners do that if you didnt buy the product from them and pay them for install.

 

About what I paid a few years ago.

 

Which haltech are you guys running? I've been looking at the elite 1500+ kit. Would it be better to save up for the 2500?

 

What best matches your engine. I haven't looked in a while, but feel the 1500 would be best for yours.

Throttle control, number of injectors, number of cylinders, and number of cams to control. Which model best fits that, is the model that you want.

 

I know with the vvti on the 2tr I have to go with the 1500 at least.

I heard AEM might be discontinuing it’s FIC6 controller - does anyone have a confirmation of this? I couldn’t find any information on their site regarding that. Just bought one so I’m slightly concerned about software updates if they’re not selling them anymore etc. Thanks!
