Let's talk Teardrop Trailers

Loving the variety of rigs here!

She's a work in progress, but our CLC Teardrop should be ready to roll early this spring. We're a little further than she appears here (wiring is mostly done, doors and hatch are fitted).

Looks like you got it in the nick of time They're out of stock of pretty much everything, likely til this virus thing winds down. Is that a Harbor Freight ATV rack on the tongue?

 

Cool I need to look at one of those.

Is this one done yet? I saw some pictures of how the whole thing goes together and the building cradle/form dealie. Pretty nifty!

 

Not quite, we ran out of warm weather last year (epoxy and varnish are both super temperature dependent). Probably a solid week or so of work to wrap her up.

 

I know that feeling all too well. I'm going to apply spray on bed liner to the front of my trailer and fenders, but it recommends 68*. Our daily high hasn't even hit 60* yet. On the plus side, while sitting and staring at the masking tape I realized that it's not quiiiiiite straight in one section, so at least I'll have time to fix that. I was hoping today we'd get above 60*, but the thermometer is at 35* this morning. Not today Raptor Liner... not today.

 

I'll play. We picked up a 10.5 NOBO in May of 2018. My wife and I have always backpacked and tent camped, but after a couple years of two little ones we decided we needed something to simplify. I was working on a M416 resto-mod but in the short/long term we decided on this:



At first we thought a queen size bed area would be more than enough room for two adults, a 2yo, a 4yo and a medium sized dog. Heck a 3 person tent was doing the tick before. Wrong. Apparently when the kids were smaller and in the tent they must not have moved much in their sleep. That first night in the trailer I lost count of how many times I was punched, kicked, or rolled on by the kids or nearly suffocated by the dog trying to nest on my head. Something needed to be done, so bunk beds were in order!



I fabricated a bracket the would mount to our food locker and stay in place while all the other pieces could be removed if just the wife and wanted to head out.



Add a couple of mattresses for the adults and Bam! everyone is sleeping in comfort!

The kids absolutely loved it.



Long story short, we made a couple long trips to the east coast, camped a ton that summer, but ultimately we ended up ditching the trailer. Definitely a fun little rig but ultimately the fit and finish of trailer was its demise.

Pics of my Kodiak Adventure Products trailer. I have 100% faith in this thing that it will come wherever i drag it into and handle it. Just got my hubs to change out to Taco bolt pattern and will get rims/rubber to match. Also have a fabricator building a full exocage to mount a RTT on it for when the whole family comes out on adventures. After having a lake lot and big trailer for a lot of years, i really wanted to get back to basics, just wanted somewhere warm n dry to sleep and ability to carry a bit more stuff.

That’s pretty cool. A bit jealous you have a way to convert to Tacoma lug pattern. I haven’t found a viable option yet. The Dexter axel doesn’t allow for a hub change. The only real way o have puns so far is Timbren axels but that’s a bit up in the price range right now

 

Dexter offers a 6x5.5 hub for at least some of their axles. You should be able to do it if you're running a 3500lb axle. Only issue is that the hubs are lug-centric but the alloy Tacoma wheels are hub-centric. I used Spidertrax spacer/adapters to get mine to work properly.

 

Oh I’ve been around and around with Dexter and not going to happen with the axle I have. I put the 2.5” lift in, modified the fenders, and installed hub adapters Nd got a matching set of wheels to fit.

 

I did almost the same thing, replacing the 10" drums with 6-lug drums, then using spacers to both move the tire away from the body and convert to 12mm studs.

 

If you can't get hubs, swap out the entire axle. It would be cheaper than swapping in a Timbren system.

While you are at it, you can add brakes (if you don't have any).

 

No brakes camper is only about 1500 pounds loaded. Yes a different axle is on the list to investigate

 

It's too bad you're not closer, I've got an extra axle in my garage due to a mis-measurement. I didn't catch it til I welded the spring perch on so I couldn't return it. I'm also in the process of switching out my trailer's current electric brakes with electric brakes that have a parking brake feature (something I should have done from the get-go).

 

Mine is only about 1000 lbs, and I run 10" brakes. 7" would have been fine, but I wanted the parking brake feature, and it was not available on the smaller brakes.

Brakes on the trailer are great when you are off-road - especially going downhill.
