Anything welding

Right or left handed, upside down and through a mirror. (disclaimer; this is my buddy, who remains unknown because of where he welds during the day...lol). Mirror base is in the door jam. TIG, remote button start.

All the exhaust tube parts arrived today. There's plenty of material for practice welds, and for the repair itself. All I need now is the muffler and the pipe expander I ordered last week. And for it to stop raining.

I was hoping these parts might indicate what kind of metal they are made out of, but there's nothing useful on the labels. It's magnetic and bright, so I think it is some kind of plated steel?



Does anyone know, are exhaust connectors typically galvanized or zinc plated? I don't want to poison myself breathing that stuff, and I'm out of viable respirator options due to the pandemic.

Also, with the expanded pipes, can I just slide one over the other and weld it as a one-sided lap joint, or do I actually need to grind both pipes for a perfect butt joint?

 

I think most muffler pipe is aluminized. It welds good, just don’t breathe the fumes. It could have a galvanized finish. You can slide the ends over each other and weld them, no grinding required.

 

Yep, aluminized is what I was told too. It does MIG weld very nice.

I figure I breathed enough aluminum fumes building my drift boat, a little pipe coating isn't gonna make a difference.

I'm still gonna get the 'timers.

 

Always avoid butt joints in thinner material where possible .

Are you welding to the old exhaust pipe ?

If both sides are slip fit two clamps and be done unless you would rather weld things.

You want 100% cotton clothing any of the blends just melt nothing like having the melted clothing stuck to your skin while it burns leaves some nasty scars. In my case a very painful lesson when I was young and clueless

I always keep Aloe Vera Jell handy though it seems I get more burns trying to cook.

 

They say one of the best ways to learn is thru pain. How come I have so many burn scars?

Am I the only slow learner here?

I mean liners are cheap unless your dealing with Aluma Pro guns

 

Negative. One of the worse weld burns I ever had was I was under a Jeep welding on the exhaust, a glob fell off and landed on my stomach right in my belly button. When I rolled off the creeper it rolled down my stomach. That hurt! That was back when I drank, thank goodness for sobriety!

 

Some else keeps catching on fire!!

Might be you need the pain to make you feel your still alive .

 

I take the liners completely out. I got a very small funnel and pour lacquer thinner or acetone down the liner.

Compressed air to dry it out. I wait a day just to be safe before I use it.

 

My worst was was tack welding some parts on the bench. It was a quick, easy job. I was welding bare handed. A hot landed on my wedding ring. Holy shit! Gold is a very good conductor of heat. Instant blister on my finger under the ring.

 

Silicone wedding rings for me now. I made my first one out of 316 stainless, never burnt myself with it but did have numerous little pieces stuck to it from welding with no gloves.

 

I just said No to rings Having never worn any the wedding ring lasted about a Hour .

Seeing far to many ring fingers burned to a crisp

 

Found these cutting glasses in this torch cart I bought the other day. Wonder how old they are?

 

Friend of mine in Alabama sends me these pump shafts that are worn on the end from an o ring. I weld them and turn them down and they work like new. Probably done 10 for him.

 

Do they get re-heat treated after?

 

No. The only thing hard on them are the teeth on the gear.

 

So the gear is press fit on the shaft? Nice looking work by the way, I’m just curious.

 

No, it's one piece. I assume the teeth are flame hardened. These shafts come out of hydraulic pumps on a Farmall Cub made from 1947-1979. There isn't a lot of pressure or force on them, they are pretty simple.

 

One perk to welding is now that the CDC recommends a face mask, I'm all set. I'll just wear my half-mask to the store and get stares of jealousy.
