Just going to add a fan controlled by an arduino and I'll call her good enough for now.

Hoping to sneak into the father in laws shop to utilize his break press and do a real mobile to portable rack set up.

For now, this lass will do.

Hey everybody! Just found this thread. Been over on the LED Bed Lights (Matt Gecko) thread, and the Diamondback thread.

I just got my Technician's License (showed up on the database) about two weeks ago. I'm in Bullhead City, AZ, Grid: DM25RD. I've gotten on a local repeater (W7GAA on 145.17, -0.6MHz, PL 131.8, Echolink 846070, WIRES) a few times, but that's it for me so far.

I'm running a Kenwood TH-D74A HT, and have it attached to a Diamond 39" Tri-Band Mobile Antenna on my '16 Taco. Will be looking to get a dedicated mobile and Shack Radio at some point, but for now, maybe a mobile amplifier...? We'll see how much I use this.

Almost went with the Yaesu FTM 400XDR, and a Yaesu HT (for local Fusion (WIRES) repeater...), but decided to get the Kenwood HT to use "everywhere".

Hope to catch some of you out there someday.

Why use an arduino if you already have a pi? 40 GPIO pins doing NOTHING!

Do you want the fan temperature controlled?

I guess I could just write a simple program and have it open when it boots.

What's the fan draw? I'd think on the order of maybe 200mA. You probably could just switch it directly with a logic level FET.

    Image stolen from the Interwebz.

    Use perhaps an IRLB8721.

    https://www.infineon.com/cms/en/pro...v-n-channel-power-mosfet/irlb8721/#!documents

Very low Vgs(th) of 1.8V typically (so a 3.3V pin will easily drive it to saturation) and a max Ids at 3.3V driving and 12V Vds is going to be probably at least 20 amps continuous, maybe more since fully on Rds is 8.7mΩ. It's $0.85 plus a couple of resistors.

Okay now I am interested in this kind of set up, a radio in a case?

My buddy and I have been talking about doing a radio in a Ammo can but think a pelican style case might be more resilient and easier to keep dry.

    Here is the thought...………….

put a Yaseu FT400 in a Pelican case, be able to use it in a mobile application, connect power and antenna, set control panel so it can be used and of course the mic. Then when you arrive at camp site or relay station for event, connect to end feed type antenna or an antenna on a tripod...…......when you get home, rinse an repeat as needed for a ham shack radio.

He is moving into a rental property where he can not permanently attach an antenna, his truck is leased so no perm mods...…………...

    thoughts?

Me own the house, so a more perm solution down the line can be implemented, but for now my mobile rig and a Radio in Pelican case seems a viable option. I have dubbed it
    A Radio Bird...…..……………...

    Thoughts?

Well, that can control board looks complete. Not a bad idea if you want to control a fan with variable speed.

I am running a couple 5v fans on my Pis with a mosfet as @DaveInDenver showed you can do. I also have a bunch or cheap 5v logic level, 10A relays with optocouplers for isolation laying around. I'd probably just run a fan with a mosfet and use a DS18B20 for temperature if you want that input. Or if you are mainly cooling the pi, check its CPU temperature to turn the fan on and off.

Would be pretty simple to PWM the fan to be proportional to the CPU speed.

Or rather, proportional to CPU temperature.

My Anytone 878 HT is having hard time reaching the closest repeater...I am looking at buying a dual band VHF/UHF J-pole external antenna to run from my HT's SMA connector. Do any of you have recommendations where to get one?

    Thanks.
