    I have a 2008 prerunner, V-6, Automatic, non LSD and a 3"lift with 285/75r16 BFG tires. I've done DTLT headers, K&N CAI, Borla exhaust, unichip. I've got power but I'm considering regearing my truck. I'd love to get a lil better mpg. I know I know. I'm pretty sure I have 3.73 gears stock so should I go to 4.10 or 4.56?? Will I see an increase in mpg?? Any input from those that have done would be appreciated. Thanks!!

    I regeared when I had my '01 from 4.1 to 4.56 with 33" tires and saw an increase of about 1.5mpg and felt like more power at low end (engine didn't have to work so hard at low end - think of a 10 speed bike in 10th gear and trying to start from a dead stop, of course that's an exaggeration but you get the idea). That's about the same as going from 3.73 to 4.1 which just gets you back to the stock equivalent. Going past the stock equivalent to even lower gearing will end up robbing you of mpg since the engine will be screaming on the highway.

    It was worth it for me since I wheeled the truck and needed the lower gearing especially with a manual but your return on investment if your only looking to save mpg's is not worth it. Gears (600) + install (300 each diff)cost about $1200. If you drive 15000 miles per year at $3 / gallon and get 16.5 mpg it will cost you $2812 per year in gas. Same deal at 18mpg costs you $2571 per year. That's a $240 / year savings. So ROI is 5 years just to break even. Not worth it just to save some cash.

    Gotcha. But I'm in a prerunner with no LSD. I called west coast differential and they said all I would need is a ring and pinion and bearing kit. Totaled to about $375 and I'm considering installing it myself. I've got a friend that's a mechanic. I am looking to improve mpg but a power gain would be nice too plus new gears my be better as far as wear and tear on the vehicle. With me having 3.73 gears is 4.10 where I wanna go?? Is 4.56 overkill to the point it will decrease mpg's?? I don't offroad so that's not what I'm needing it for nor do I pull a lot of trailers so torque isn't an issue. Just curious. Thanks.

    I made this up quickly for you. I assumed that you had "size 3" tires stock. Obviously, the top speeds are rediculously high because there is no account for drag, friction, powertrain losses, etc, etc... 4.10s look to be about stock.

    thanks for the info. I just guess I'm wanting to know for sure if I should do it. Does it improve mpg?? or just power?? I assume 4.10 gears are the winner??

    Well do you think the money is well spent?

    Gears = 100-200 bucks (good luck with the 4.10 gear search, very hard to come by)
    install kit = 45-175 depending on shape of current differential parts
    install = ~300ish.

    Thats a good 700 on the high side for regearing. If you not locked you should also really consider that if you wheel cause it will save money to do it at the same time in the long run. Are you going to be saving 700 dollars worth of gas over the ownership of the truck?

    I guess I'm waiting to hear from someone who has actually removed there OEM gears and installed new ones. I know people out there have done it. Just want some feedback on mpg stats and power returns. Power gains seem to be there and noticable as ive read people say its one of the best mods as far as bang for the buck but what about mpg's??? Hmmmmm

    Its not so much a power "gain" as giving the truck back its powerband that it originally started with

    I regeared my Dodge from 3:55's to 4:10's when I went from 31" to 32" tires. I was getting 12 mpg, and after the re gear, I got 14. Power was the reason I changed. I personally think re gearing is the best gain per buck you can get.

    Or better if you over gear a little

    Thats why chris im thinking of sgticking with 4.56 over 4:88. The 4.56 already put me 100rpm over stock at 65

    Yeah. If your gonna re gear, I prefer to over gear just a tad. That way, MPG doesnt suffer, and you get more performance.

    anthonys i believe are 295 so he went with 4.56 because i think he might be running a 34"ish tire? if your going with 285/75/16 thats under 33" so either 4.10 or even a 4.30 would work very well even!

    Ok. Nice. Did you go with sierra's 4.56 ring and pinion?? What are your mpg's before and after the re-gear?? Are you lifted?? Tire size?? Thanks guys.

    Ok. I didn't know about 4.30 gears. That it went from 4.10 to 4.56?? Guess not. With my tire size do you think 4.56 is overkill or will negatively affect my mpg??
