OEM air intake? Hood insulation solution

So as you can see my air intake is cracked, previous owner jbwelded it.
Was wondering how important this is, and are the OEM ones really worth paying for?

Isumo or Perfect Fit $20-$25 Another thing, the insulation or whatever you call it, under my hood is totally falling off.
Wondering what yall have replaced it with, or just tear it off, or what?

That hole means it's completely bypassing the air filter and some sensors, definitely replace. As for if OEM is worth it, no idea.

You could replace the insulation with dynamat or something but definitely tear that junk off

 

Definitely replace the intake. Rockauto seems to have decent replacements for most stuff, I'd go there or a wrecking yard and try to find a used one.

As for the insulation, I've literally never had any on my 2004. Tear that crap off. I'm not sure what it's trying to insulate. All it would do is reflect heat from the engine back to the engine and cause it to run hotter. Ditch it.

I ripped the OEM hood insulation crap off both my Taco and my 4runner when I got them. One of the first things I did. I hate that shit!

I think they stopped putting the insulation in '00 or '01 as @jbrandt said I've never seen any with it, only pics on TW on older models

and where the crack is it's right at the butterfly so any contaminants go right to the cylinders. either OEM or AM jsut make sure it's the right one for the vehicle. and don't crank the clamp too tight, just so it's snug not to pop off, there is a ridge there for a reason

 

Tacoma hoods have insulation? Seriously I have owned several Toyotas and currently 1 first Gen and 1 sec Gen and none of them have the hood insulation, then again all of them were purchased "Pre-owned" never new. Just take it off, looks cleaner.
Rock Auto and Parts Geek are usually my goto parts guys, have not been disappointed yet.

 

Not OEM, but it was cheap and flexible. Good enough to be cut and not worry about (plastic?) rot or deforming. I did some cutouts for fun tuning.

Mine came with one when I bought it in 1997, I’ve replaced it a few times over the years, it probably keeps
the noise down a little and maybe heat off the hood from the engine, but no real valve to have one I think.

With that crack in the intake your definitely running lean and probably will throw a code if you haven’t already

Ok, I went with MTC brand air hose, middle of the road at $40

I haven't had any codes though.

got rid of the insulation, prob won't bother replacing it with anything, but we'll see.

The painted job looks sharp.

 

Hood insulation does NOTHING for engine noise. I installed a Dynamat hoodliner at the cost of $60 and my sound meter showed there was no change.

For the previous 15 years I've owned it, I've waxed it at least once a year and currently have Plastidip on a large portion of it and I have zero paint problems. My view is that hood insulation is worthless. I would get the painted product above if it were removeable to easily clean it.

 

i have my original hood insulation still, has a few tears and is starting to droop in spots, i can see why some don't care for it, especially if you got yerself a fancy trail rig on dusty off-the-beaten-path roads. I took mine out on some weird adventure trail in WI (called TWAT) last summer for the first time, mostly dirt back country roads for 100s of miles literally.
i made it to near the Canadian border in Minnesota on Lake Superior and stopped at a wand wash place to clean some of the mess off, opened the hood and the insulation thing was caked in dirt, tried rinsing it off lightly but it got worse being so old and basic brittle

I applied the BINFINISH multi layer process on the insulation when the truck was brand new, 21 years ago. The pic was taken two days ago. It is washed in place with a wash mitt just like the rest of the truck, weekly. It's been a DTR for 17, make that 18 years.

I think there were 2 versions of the insulation. This one had a cloth like layer on the outside. It appeared to be glued to the semi stiff fiberglass mat with a water soluble adhesive. The first time it saw an errant splash of water from the first under hood hose down it began to fall off, in minutes.

When it was out, there was a noticeable increase in engine noise. Not much but noticeable. The kind thing one would forget about after a week. Might have had something to do with background noise at a "new car" level. Probably why Toyota quit putting it on.

For me, the "preservation" effort was due to Toyota not fully painting the underside of the hood. Couldn't live with 4 or 5 square feet of bare gray primer/sealer.

but it was probably removed once when the hood needed some repair & refinish at the body shop

 

I tried to google “binford” nothing. Do you happen to have a link to this product? I’m interested in buying one for my 2020 SR5. It didn’t come with one, and the hood feels incomplete. Like a garage, when the contractors only paint the seams.

for anybody that does not run the insulation i am curious if your hood is HOT AF to the touch after running all day, mine has not ever been hot, so very cool to the touch
it does not even melt the snow & ice piled sometimes on there in the winter, just around the edges lol

 

It's a coating process done to an existing, intact and clean liner for durability and wash-ability.

BINFORD TOOLS/products do not sell to the general public. They cater to a short list of shops with only the finest credentials. No one sporting anything less than a triple deck halo can even hope to get on the waiting list for an account.

The "process" is roughly equivalent an application of several layers of 3M #08882 paintable "underseal". This is a hard setting, smooth, thick coating not like the regular "rubberized undercoating".
