I have a few Griffin cans. Their taper mount design is my favorite on the market. That's due to its simplicity and the fact that the taper portion is behind the threads, unlike other companies. This helps with removal and keeping a repeatable zero since there's no potential carbon build up to deal with.

I started with the Recce7. I've since picked up the Explorr .30 cal model due to the significant difference in weight and length. I've shot them side by side and can't really tell a difference in sound. If there is a difference, it's small. Like 1-3db at most. Easily my favorite can right now. While the .30 cal cans are effective with 5.56, Griffin had a damn good promotional deal on the new Resistance 22M ($125?) with the purchase of another can. So I picked up a .224 Explorr which was just released from jail two days ago. Haven't even had a chance to shoot it yet.

L to R, Explorr in .224, Explorr in .30 cal, and the Recce7. Keep in mind that while the Explorr is 5oz less the the Recce7, it's going to feel like it weighs even less since it doesn't hang out as far on the rifle. I really don't think there's a better combination of weight, compactness, sound, and durability out there.

Midwest Industries has a line of handguards with a 1.75"ID for those wanting to tuck suppressors or blast shields. :notsure:

maybe close.. I’m running a barking spider inside a 12 inch SAR3 rail without issues ( 1.4in OD and 1.5in ID). It’s shooting nice groups.

The dangers of steel ammo in a tight tolerance AR platform is primarily the poly coating on the steel casings begins to melt as the chamber heats up. The result is failure to eject. I've seen casings break the extractor with the round melted into the chamber. This is not a problem on the AK platform as the casing of an AK round is not straight walled, like a 556. Additionally the tolerances in most AKs are much more forgiving.

My budget PSA pistol isn’t a super tight tolerance machine, but like I said it was bone dry straight from the factory (my fault). I’ll be buying brass from now on

I've never been very fond of the MI or Troy rails. I've always appreciated the BCM KMR and really like the Alpha rail, mainly due to price and the more simplistic material. It's really not a deal breaker to have a little barrel exposure. I just like to keep it minimal.

I've currently got the Noveske NSR-13.5 on my 14.5 and have LOVED it for years. Just want to change things up a bit and Noveske product is :spending:

DD makes a keymod rail designed to fit around a can but also a bit pricey and honestly, I like the feel of a skinny rail like the NSR.

I don't suppose you've put an Explorr .224 next to a Recce 5 have you? I'm looking for a can that will be short, light, low blowback, and hearing safe, and the Explorr might check those boxes.

I think a rail .75" shorter than the barrel seems to be the sweet spot for keeping things clean/tight.

    6.25" barrel with a 5.5" handguard

    11.3" barrel with a 10.5" handguard

The Recce5 is like .3" longer and 3oz heavier the the Explorr. Only other side by side comparison I made was with the M4SD-K.

You're speaking my language. was looking into an 11.5 or 12.5" barrel. Trying to match it with the ideal rail.

Not sure about the 12.5" barrels, but for the 11.5", I know the KAC URX 4 and the Triarc handguards come in 10.75"

Sorry, I definitely phrased that poorly. I'm mostly curious about how they stack up for sound, but with the Explorr being down in the mid 130's I'm probably going to be just fine.

I learned that lesson when I had a steel case stuck in the chamber and had to buy a brass dowell rod to push it out.
