Read some reviews of the gfc and not being very good quality?

 

Those GFC are pretty cool, but I still have a hard time understanding the price tag. I've watched the videos and stuff and they appear to be a quality product. Some of the door and bed seals I could see leaking.

 

Definitely needs to drop at least $20,000 on account of it being an AT.

 

I think it's a bit extreme to say poor quality, from what I've read in the GFC thread most of the issues sound like a new product getting the kinks ironed out. The issues I'm aware of are the plastic hinges on the side doors have some durability issue, they changed canvas materials, and changed the front pivot tube from steel to aluminum due to rust issues. It sounds like they are being pretty good about fixing/getting replacement parts to customers as fast as they can but in my opinion this is the risk you take purchasing a brand new product, there will always some initial tweaks.

 

Rare gold coins come with it, perhaps?

 

People on here have made replicas for about $2-3000 (just in materials). When you consider all the hours put into constructing it and the fact it has to be sold for a profit the price point isn't horrible....still way more than I would pay though.

 

Completely agree, I bought Ripcord's patterns and am working off them on a design of my own to build this spring/summer. I'm looking at about $3k just in materials and my labor is free. That's with me doing all the welding and fab and my mom sewing the canvas. If I didn't know someone that's a good seamstress that'd easily tack on another grand just to have someone sew you the tent.

 

They seemingly sell well at $6.5K (backlogged) so the price is about what their target market is willing to pay for them. What kind of material do they use on the doors?

 

The doors are an aluminum composite panel, the issues aren't with the doors themselves but the living hinge they use. Basically it is a piece of solid plastic that just bends back and forth with no moving parts. Their intention was that it seals out water better being solid but a few members have had the hinges tear despite them being rated for a crazy high number of cycles.

 

And if you were like me and didn't have the equipment, ability, or know-how, it'd cost a lot more to have it fab'd!

I know our Habitat was expensive, but to my wife and I it's been worth the expense. It really has changed how we recreate. We've made a lot of good memories, and will be making a ton more.
