God damnit heres an example of not being disciplined: OHI had been kicking my ass so I was going to dump it for the time being, set the sell order at $30, reduced it to 29.20 yesterday and it sold, its over $31 today. I'm still glad I shorted it because I think highly debt riddled real estate companies will bring teh suck in the next few months, but still!!

I ultimately blame google for not removing it from my watched stocks list yet after I sold it LOL!!!

That’s a good thing for densely populated areas. It’s too easy to pass when you’re constantly surrounded by people.

Interested that I read an article in the San Francisco Bee that said shutting down schools statistically had not slowed down the infection rate in Hong Kong compared to other countries that had not closed schools and this is a paper from one of the earliest / most heavily restrictive cities. I work in education and the effects of this will have some interesting results, but will probably not have a huge effect overall; parents are typically the largest influence on their child's educational outcomes anyway.

Going to be honest. Seems like it's still a little on the pricier side looking at the history. Is there a reason this stock performs well when the DOW is down?

Do you think there is a possibility that the having kids stuck at home will benefit the education system when things come around? At least in the disciplinary field I guess. I'm assuming that bad parents who typically throw their kids in someone else's hands every day are really having a reality check right now. Just theorizing.

That is surprising. If a bunch of kids got it, then went home to their parents and grandparents, you'd think that would accelerate the spread. I guess nobody really knows how this thing works though.

I just noticed something interesting from our conversation about ex-dividend dates, and the drop in price. This is something I never realized, but may be important to watch.

When I look at my brokerage in my holdings for T, it shows a big drop today. I think they are calculating it using yesterdays closing price, and then just showing the "drop" as a percentage of loss from yesterday's close.

When I look at CNBC and Seeking Alpha, they both show T as being up today. I think they removed the value of the dividend (instead of using yesterday's closing price), so the stock is up relative to its depreciation from the dividend payment.

I hope that makes sense, but it's something to look out for when looking at price action on an ex-dividend date.

Getting things while they're low for when they go back up and have a higher div. I'm focusing on that more than a plan to sell them off "soon", these are 5-10 year holds.

I saw the talks yesterday and thought they'd hold or go down today. Why, I have no idea. But, I didn't consider them. :annoyed:

I asked the dividend payment based on the T stock I purchased. I'm following this as well. Doesn't really bother me though. I didn't purchase with the intent to make a lot of money. This is all a learning experience for me.

Learning experience for me as well. I have never looked this deeply into it. I am learning how the depreciation works though (company immediately loses the value of the dividends paid on the ex-dividend date). I guess it's common sense, if they pay out some of their money, they lose that exact amount of value. It gets tricky when an irrational stock market doesn't care about the actual value of the company.

I show it closing at 29.56 yesterday and opening at 29.96 today. So the current price of 29.61 could be viewed as up or down depending on which you were comparing to.

Yea, definitely what you're comparing it to. Before or after the dividend was removed from the value. It seems different quotes will do it different ways.

I "think" the difference is pre and post market activity rather than dividend related.
Just to clarify, you're not saying the dividend is automatically subtracted from the stock price right? Just that the market tends to/should do that?

Isnt it a good thing when the dividend gets paid out and the price drops? You just picked up shares a discount with your dividend being reinvested.

I heard some compelling arguments that closing schools would also lower the pool of available healthcare professionals, as they now have to stay home to watch their kids. Then again no one really assesses risk vs reward especially when you have an uneducated populace wanting peoples head on a platter if they dont "do something". Hence knee jerk reactions.

Here is what got me thinking.

My brokerage account, for T, when looking at my holdings as of right now:

    upload_2020-4-8_13-30-15.jpg

CNBC and Seeking Alpha quotes for T right now:

    upload_2020-4-8_13-31-0.jpg

    upload_2020-4-8_13-31-38.jpg

I think my brokerage is showing the depreciation in the daily move, while the other quotes just "assume" it and only show price action.

Makes sense. We have 2 guys at our plant with 5 kids o_O the plant manager and an engineer. I can't imagine being told "All your kids are now at home, no day care, nothing...and you have to come to work, good luck, hope the oldest at 8 years old can cook and manage the kids...?"
