I bought my 03 Tacoma with just the spare key. Its the Limited model and I know that it has keyless entry. I ended up purchasing this remote on eBay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280502467508&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT#ht_500wt_1182

On the backside of the remote it has FCC ID: ELVATDD

I ran it though the instructions on this site as to how to program. Open door, turn key, etc...
    http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89749

Well I get to the last step and the truck locks and unlocks several times while beeping but I cannot get the remote to work.

Am I missing a step which tells you how to program a new remote to work with a particular vehicle? And is code ELVATDD correct for our Tacoma's?

I did search but it did not provide me with much help.

    Thank you

    Ok, I found another guide:

    http://www.customtacos.com/tech/files/tsb/TVIP-RS3200-Programming.pdf

Ran through the steps to clear codes and program remote along with the procedure to just program new remote. The truck beeps but the remote does not work. (lights up, but does not work w/ truck).

Pretty sure this is the wrong remote

Can someone tell me the FCC ID on the back of your remote for your 01-04 Tacoma?
How do you tell if you have the factory installed or dealer installed alarm?

Im thinking maybe I need the one that says ELVAT1B.

    Thanks.

That's for a tundra. I bet it's getting screwed up with the power window feature on there. Doubt it will work. You could always take it to the dealer and ask, but they will charge a pretty penny.

So the remote for the Tacoma only has the lock/unlock feature and not the window feature?

    FCC ID BAB237131-56
Several on e-bay. Bought 2 for my 2004 DC which only came with a key. Took about 2 minutes apiece to program with supplied instructions. Very easy and no problems.

Added that you do need to know whether it was factory or port installed. Almost all were port installed as mine was. Yours being a limited, I don't know, possibly factory installed? I was told there is a difference in the remote depending on the installation. I know it confuses the matter, I had the window sticker which helped me decide to go with the BAB237131-56. If I was betting, you probably have the same.

Well, I'm pretty sure that I do not have the KARR dealer installed alarm. There is no aftermarket red light drilled into my dash anywhere. I also do not see any factory alarm light (My '97 4Runner had a little light to the left that blinked red and had security written underneath it).

So at this point I am pretty sure it is just the standard keyless entry system. Here are the alarm remote FCC codes I am trying.

    ELVATDD : Does not work
ELVAT1B : On order - Ebay (we shall see)
    BAB237131-56: On order (thanks Blitz10)

The places I ordered from have exchange policies so I will figure out which one works and then exchange the other two and sell the third on eBay.

BTW I called the dealer and gave them the VIN, see if they could help me out by telling me which alarm the truck had. They told me that all they could see was wether or not it had a factory installed alarm. Dealer options dont show up on VIN details (makes sense).

Dealer said that my VIN comes back to factory keyless entry only, but he also says he has seen a VIN sheet show factory keyless but it also had a factory alarm. Way to throw another wrench into this. I will try the remotes and update so if someone has this issue later this may help them.

BAB237131-56 is the remote you need for the 2003 Tacoma for standard keyless entry.

    Thanks alot Blitz10

I must have ordered the wrong one as well, I just ordered BAB237131-56 thanks to this thread.

I still have the paperwork in my console that said "VIP" but I wasn't sure which system it had since i just bought the truck last month.

I'll report back if "BAB237131-56" works for me because these https://www.ebay.com/itm/312740108307 which say they fit my truck did not.

This is the one I ordered for my '03 and it works great, no problems programming either.

The ones I linked in the post? that wouldn't work for me?

It seems like they work on some trucks but not the ones with the VIP RS3200 system that I suspect my truck has. I could be wrong because i dont have the original remote but neither remote they sent me would work.

So I took the advise I was finding online and purchased the FCC ID: BAB237131-056 and dealer Part Number: 08191-00922.

That is the one I have. My truck didn't have one when I bought it last year and I tried this one, worked great!

Actually talk to someone (phone/email) before ordering a remote or else you may end up getting the wrong part. The people selling the parts can tell you which remote you need based on model/year/system, and I'm sure they'd rather send you the correct part the first time, so you don't have to send non-working parts back (extra shipping costs, etc.).

As stated above its a unique situation.

The ones I ordered are suppose to be for my truck but they do not work, it even says it in the listing.

While doing research I stumbled upon this post and it seems the FCC ID: BAB237131-056 and dealer Part Number: 08191-00922 works for our 03 Tacomas but "DOESN'T" list it as being applicable. I think this is truly a unique situation.

I also saw somewhere else on another thread that the 2003 Tacomas came with an alarm system and to make it functional you needed to remove one pin and install a glass break detection system and its ready to go. The glass break detection isn't required for the alarm to function.

Toyota's "port installed" VIP system came in several versions and is common on Tacomas. It should have a glass breakage sensor in the console blanking panel and will have a control module, probably behind the driver side kick plate. It has its own remote and FCC ID.

The "factory" remote keyless entry is less common -- usually on Limited and other high-spec trucks. It has no glass breakage sensor and no separate control module. It's remote is similar, but has a different FCC ID. One or the other remote has a red LED -- I think it's on the VIP.

My 2003 shows factory RKE on its build sheet, but it had no remote when I got it (except for a crappy aftermarket alarm) and I've never been able to get the truck into programming mode to see if I can find one to work.

If any of the latest contributors to this tread turn out to have factory RKE on their trucks, I'd be *very* interested to learn exactly how you got into programming mode. I've tried all the door / door lock combinations I can find referenced and none have worked on my truck. (I'm starting to wonder if the original build data is correct and that it may not have RKE.)

Unfortunately I didn't get the remotes with the truck, but I'll look for that behind the kick panel. You got me curious because I could not find it under the seats or the dash. But I do no for a fact that the VIP booklet is in my owners manual kit in the glovebox.

If the VIP system was the "RED LIGHT" fob then the one I just purchased should work fine.

Good info, I was reading your thread about your alarm trying to figure all this out too, lol
