I have to do a mid-level suspension upgrade on a budget.

I was planning on going with skinnies. I don't want to have to worry about messing with a CMC or fender trimming or any of that.

Also, I'm in Ohio...

This is what @RobP62 had on his Inferno and probably what I will go with.

Combined with the Headstrong 3 Leaf AAL the 5160/6112 kit was perfect, for me. The BP51 was on my radar too, but overkill and overpriced for my needs. The setup came highly recommended by Marie at HS. When my peeps came up to do the install for me, they were completely impressed with it. They were by far more experienced than me in all aspects of off-roading. I would do it again if I had to.

 

Ok so the 6112s come with their own springs they are 600ish lb springs not ome. Also 5160s are a decent shock

 

Yeah, see. I did the research like a year ago, but have forgotten half of it.

 

Oh, definitely 600 lb Skipper. they are great for no armor but as soon as I added all that aluminum underneath and the sliders things got a little squishy. If the truck never would have been totalled and before I added a bumper and winch I would have upgraded the coils. In the rear I would have most likely had to add something too. At that point I would have likely weighed the cost of upgrading it (because I still feel like the basis is a great system) to handle the loads or replaced it altogether with a new system.

It's difficult to assess your needs because they can vary so much from other peoples needs. For instance, my setup would have been weak going with Y'all rock crawling the serious stuff. But for bumpy forest trails, that are moderately inclined meh, I think going slow would prevail.

A lot of people get caught up in the whole "Lift" game and can lose track of what's important. I know a lot of people, probably the majority, would say that a 2 or 3 hundred dollar spacer lift is sacrilege. On the other side of the coin are the people that want to drop over $5k on a suspension upgrade that will only lift the truck the same amount.

Each of these people have different goals and needs. Each are ok in my book, within reason, as long as they are using them for their intended purpose, and to meet their needs. Peer pressure should never be a reason though for either.

There are people that run the 5100's with the higher rate springs and are perfectly satisfied and more importantly, completely capable of keeping up on trails with just about anyone. The best part is, they saved some money and their truck looks fantastic. I was so close to going that route too. I know me though, and I know I have less sense than most people. Which translates to being harder than most people on everything I own. Because I had a little extra cash, I stepped up to the next level as protection against myself, my stupidity.

I've been in two Tacoma's now since 2017 and due to circumstances beyond my control, and for what other stupid reasons, I have still not been off road. Ironically, I like on 2.5 acres and a lot of it is old woods. All of it is hilly AF. Challenging hilly. I could easily clear paths, and practice all the time. If I never experience being off road as a kid, or didn't grow up doing this type of activity I would be all over it. That doesn't mean I don't want to, or won't be excited doing it, it just means I will need the free time to do it. In the meantime, I will use others experiences to continue preparing.

Certainly do your research, and ask lots of questions. Keep an eye out, brand loyalists will push certain brands down your throat. They are easy to spot, though.
Speak with several different people you trust.

 

I am a brand loyal person and the story would explain the reason behind it. I really wasn’t trying to cone cross that way which is a reason I tagged several of you. I agree 100% he should figure out what he likes and what works best for him.

Wtf is going on here. I thought this was the sos bullshit thread for a page or two.

 

My 6112s with 600lb springs couldnt deal with my armor weight. So i upgraded the springs. Other issue I have now is the bushings are shot on the lower bolts. Granted when i wheel its rough on the truck; Windrock, Black Mountain. Oh and one of my 5160s is blown, Bilstein wont warranty.
however for a light truck and no extreme offroad I'd recommend them.
