    My first toyota is a 2020 tacoma trd sport, 6 cyl.. Any reason why not to drive with the ETC on all the time? Thanks.

    The ETC is usually used when towing something. You can choose which gear you want it to stay in such as 4th or 5th gear and it will not shift past that point. By using the ETC it gives you a little extra power when you need it without the transmission having to downshift all the time. I towed a 5x8 trailer recently and used ETC for the 900 mile trip.

    I'd assume if it was meant to be on all the time, they wouldn't have made a button for it. In saying that, don't think you'd blow up your truck by leaving it on all the time.

    I use mine all the time unless I'm on a freeway doing 65+. I use cruise control on the highway, and always get 18-20+ MPG.

    I live on back country roads in the hills of Western NC, and also always use S mode to keep the trans where I want it.

    Is this how you keep the cruise control from using 6th gear? I have heard here that will help with mileage on long trips with the cruise control on.

    If you have it in auto, it will shift at a later rpm than with it off and gives the throttle a seemingly faster response. There is no power increase, it just feels that way.

    It's a secret
    The et cetera (etc) buttion actually will cause your truck to trudge along like a Ford Ranger... use the ECT button instead...imagine it's just one of the many control switches required to start up and pilot your Millennium Falcon...it MUST always be ON...

    :crapstorm:Ready for correcting the ETC -> ECT...haha...:cheers:

    Used ETC alot in my 4 banger, since upgrading the to v6 I haven't reached for it. Towing or mountain climb probably best use for it.

    Off topic you a monarch as in ODU?

    The Eco button in our CRV AWD will get you run over, hehe, its a big dog in that mode. Just the opposite of what it does in a Tacoma.

    Most of my driving is in the city (LA Orange County) and use the ECT button all the time, it helps to stay in gear longer...

    There’s a few members on this site that sell a simple plug and play device that allows you to leave the ECT on all the time. I put it on my truck about 3 months ago and am very pleased with it. It just changes the engine mapping and allows the truck to ride out the gears a little longer. Doesn’t make the truck faster, just minimizes the constant shifting these trucks are known for...
