Bed extender suggestions?

I have this one too, works great, and can also work as a rear rack level with the roof.

Have the factory extender as well, seldom use but when needed it's great. I wouldn't worry about square or triangle shape.

 

Built up a bunch of liquid encouragement. Measured something like 20 times.... And I drilled the first holes in my new truck.



Wasn't hard.



It turns out that it fit perfect. I didn't have to adjust the bars at all.

It only took a beer and a half to do it.

I found the brackets for $12 on Amazon. The bed extender from my '01 is now a part of my '19.

 

Would have been much worse if you measured 1 1/2 times and had 20 beers!

Hello all,

I’m about to pick up this amp bed extender for my 2017 shortbed.

I’d like to make it as easy as possible to be able to remove it from the bed altogether, when just flipping it inwards isn’t an option. Does anyone know if the brackets that come with this kit allow for that? Or do I need the quick release brackets? If so, are these the right quick release brackets for the job? The description says for use with tonneau covers and shells. I do not have either of those, I just want to be able to pop on and off.

Any help would be great!

I have a feeling this extender would work in my 3rd Gen. Am I right?

Also, it looks like the third tube doesn't go all the way around so it's height is low on the sides being only two tubes high there and three in the middle of it? Any thoughts on that?

If you ever have plans for a tonneau cover, even if you don't have one now, get the quick release. Either way.... Get the quick release. It's better in the long run. It gives you options if you do or don't want any type of cover.

 

Amp bed extender with quick release is what I have and it works great.

 

Yea, I'll probably end up biting the bullet and buying new now...

Same one I just installed a few days ago. Good quality extender for the money.

 

That looks pretty nice. Much better than the factory one which pretty much goes at 45 degrees directly from where it connects to the back corner of the bed.

 

When you drill for this thing, is that into sheetmetal or the composite bed material?

 

It's in the sheet metal, just behind the composite. You'll see the hump in the pic.

 

The original 2G extender is the same way. I have that style with the quick release mounts.

For those considering these, please make sure you actually need it before blowing the money on a new one. I bought it for a specific need, but I found it was almost more a PITA to have in a short bed than not have it. Mine has been sitting in the rafters of my garage for almost a year. I use it in the winter when I snowblow at my Mom's but otherwise it just eats bed space.

 

I use mine when the tailgate in closed to use as a way for stuff not to fly around.

 

That's one of the big bonuses I was hoping to get with mine as well and a major use case, but the OEM ones they sell now (with new 3rd Gens anyway) angle in so sharply and immediately that it almost makes it too much of a tight space. I can put a couple paper grocery bags side by side and then you are pretty much past the straight part and into the angle, so any more have to go in there crooked. And if you have anything larger like cases of water, pop, etc. to go along with a few bags of groceries, you can't even barely fit them all. Kind of sad I can only get a few bags of groceries in to a pickup truck bed!

Having the bed mat in there makes it so stuff barely moves around, so I ended up just taking my extender out and barely ever use it now. Been debating about trying again with an aftermarket like above that has straighter sides to see if I would get more use out of it.

 

Question to anyone who will listen. Is there any bed extender that in anyway does not require any drilling or mods to the bed? Kinda dumb question but you never know!

Just scored a nice 2nd gen extender in immaculate condition from my neighbor down the road for $45. Just need the brackets. Couldn't be happier to get the original model with the more squared off design.

 

Keep us up to date with how it goes mounting and such and if you have any trouble/issues. Wondering how it will look and how well it works on a 3rd gen.

 

It may be a while. I am currently in Ohio helping my father after the death of my mother a few weeks ago. My wife who is back home in Florida texted me the picture in the post and asked if I wanted it. No question about it when I saw the picture and knew who had put it to the curb. Guy took great care of his stuff. Unfortunately he forgot to remove the brackets from the truck when he sold it. I will definitely post pictures of the fitment when I get a chance, just may be a month from now.
