I'm with you on the .243. I love that caliber. I stopped gun hunting almost 30 years ago (replaced it with archery) but if I ever started again, .243 is what I would go back to. I have 2 of them!

Our son has a .243, I bought a 6.5 Creedmore a couple years ago. I used to be a .243 guy, until the creed came along. The .243 has little recoil anyway but the 6.5 has even less than the .243

    I don't think I've shot a 6.5.

If you have a friend with one I highly recommend trying it. They are good shooting guns!

I have two. Browning A-Bolt Micro Medallion and a TC Venture. This was with standard Federal Premium factory ammo. 100gr soft point. First group was cold bore, second group was a bit tighter.

I have a Remington 600 and a 700. Both were passed down from my dad. The little 600 is my coyote gun.

I was gonna mention all those.

Especially Pork Chop Hill. (Korean War)
Doesn't get much appreciation these days.

Battle of Britain is right up the with A Bridge Too Far for authenticity.

Here's the thing. The events depicted were within living memory.
When those movies were made, there were millions of veterans who had been there.
They weren't going to tolerate too many "creative liberties" without raising Holy Hell.
Not for a big budget, so-called "serious" movie.

    Story time. :)

My Dad was a B-24 pilot in the 5th Air Force (Southwest Pacific Theater under MacArthur).
Rear base was Seven Mile Field at Port Moresby. 1943.
He had some stories, let me tell you.
His stories got me interested in History.

...For instance, the bigass fruit bats on New Guinea, the so-called "flying foxes".
The time a bunch were in a tree filled with ripe fruit near his tent and kept him up half the night with their constant chattering.
Until he got up and emptied his .45 in their general direction.
Half an hour later they're back. Repeat.

...The starving Japanese stragglers who got in the mess tent one night and killed a couple cooks.
Ground crews hastily grabbed weapons and there was a brief firefight.

...The jungle rot. Uniforms constantly damp and stinking.

...The "heckler" raids they'd do against the Jap naval base on Truk in the Caroline Islands.
A few bombers would take off at night, timed to hit Truk at daybreak.
Drop some bombs and get the Hell out.
The Japs would scramble a couple Zeros, but usually the bombers had too much of a head start.
One time a Zero caught up with them, and Pedro the tail gunner shot him down.
    "Hey Cap, I got him."
    "Parachute?
    "Yep."
    So my Dad circled around.
His brand-new co-pilot (first one had been killed) says:
"What the Hell are you doing?"
Dad: "Target practice for the gunners. Sharks down there. Besides, they do it to us."

MacArthur's Intelligence chief was always screaming for prisoners to interrogate.
The Australians weren't big on taking prisoners. They'd found too many of their guys beheaded.
So they were at a forward base and found out they'd have some passengers back to Port Moresby.
A couple Aussies and a couple Japanese prisoners.
    They land and no prisoners.
    "Sorry Mate, they fell out."

You get the flavor of it...

My Dad was gonna go career, but neither of my uncles would take over the family farm.
He was in the Air Force Reserve and got called back for the Korean War.
Stateside, flying a C-119 Flying Boxcar for paratrooper training.

He wasn't very fond of war movies. Usually they pissed him off.
But we only got 2 channels, so sometimes it was a war movie on TV in the evening, or something that pissed him off even more. :p
He did sometimes sit through a war movie.
Pork Chop Hill was one. Twelve O-clock High was another.

Battleground was another good movie. My dad liked it cuz it had a few shots of M18 Hellcats.

    Yeah, a .243 is A-Okay. Manageable recoil.
And I agree, the 5.56 is too iffy on deer.

80s movies? Weird Science is probably my favorite. Either that or Big Trouble in Little China. Okay, maybe that one more :D

I will get out again but you'll have to give me a year or two since moving takes priority. Also, got plenty of weapons options at home or just tell my dad to bring his favorite daughter a present (he was/is a marksman). It's actually a goal of mine to one day go elk hunting with him since all his most recent experiences have been with his fucktard brother who ruins it.

I'd also like to bow hunt one day and have my grandfather's bow, but it is at a higher weight than I can pull without a struggle so I just need to work on my wimpy muscles. I'll have to take a picture of it at some point. It's a beautiful bow.
