33’s vs. 35’s - opinions??

Hey guys, wanted to open up a thread for discussion on 33” vs 35” tires.
Let’s go for the average Joe usage... daily driver, some off-roading, some overlanding.

What are you guys running? Do you want to go bigger/smaller? Was it worth the extra money/work for 35’s? Do you actually get a lot more performance out of 35’s or mpg out of 33’s?

35s if you wanna cut a shit ton, regear for a lot of money, and still have bad mpg. But you'd look cool as hell in the end

Skinny 33's fit stock rigs, I see no reason to go bigger unless you get beyond moderate offroading.

 

I don't see 35s to be worth it considering the amount of cutting you gotta do to actually make them fit.

They sure do look bad ass though

 

33's. 35's just aren't worth it if you do some research, you might as well go 37's. Either way you should plan a regear to 5.29's in the budget too.

 

I’ve had two 3rd gen tacos, one on 33’s with a good amount of weight, mostly overlanding and some moderately technical terrain on a 2” lift. My experience is that I did find some limitations where bigger tires would’ve helped.
Got another truck with a 6” lift (to clear tires) and 35’s. No armor, no gears. I noticed a big difference with my approach/departure angles with the added height, but only had a minor increase in traction (if I could even tell at all)
The big surprise was actually mpg... after corrections for size difference, I got about 17mpg hwy on 35’s and 17.5mpg on 33’s with no armor. City mpg was garbage on the 35’s but a little better on 33’s

 

I agree with this, I know I'm in a second gen but close enough. If I went back with the amount of cutting/banging I did for 35's I would have just gone to 37s and tubbed the front, but I'm not one for advice, Im ramping for a SAS and 40s.

 

Your usage description is the key.

You don't even 'need' 33s. And if I'm wrong, skinnies on OE wheels don't require any suspension work, cutting or trimming.

 

I forgot to mention, my MPG's improved measurably by going to 255/85R16's, but I'm driving a 6speed truck and can keep my foot off the skinny pedal, so the longer ratio outweighs the extra weight. Your mileage may literally vary.

 

prob just run 33s or if you like a slightly bigger look you could do 34s .

33s depending on your offset you prob wont need a CMC.

 

It’s not about how big, it’s about how wide. That’s what the I’ve been told over the years. Ladies like ‘em wide.

Up until a week ago I REALLY wanted 35s - did all the necessary cutting short of beating back the firewall or tubbing (which I would have ended up doing).

Then I started looking at true measurements and noticed how most of them being 315s really run ~34.5ish like the STT Pros I wanted. Made me switch things up and decide to run Toyo 285/75/17 which is a true 34”. IMO, rather have the almost as tall tire that is much more narrow - a lot less stress on steering rack and wheel bearings

Only time 12.5” wide tire would make sense to me would be 37s - and by then I’d probably sas (if 3rd gen kits come out by then).

35's look cooler in my opinion, open up some trail and obstacles for sure. 33's are way easier to fit, drive daily, deal with in general... Unless you are wheeling some serious trails 33's and a locker will be plenty.

Nice. I like the stuffed look too. I totaled my truck so I’m gonna start another build soon. I’ll probably do BP-51’s with SPC UCAs and a bumper to push the tire forward, CMC/relocation and gears to run 35’s (After reading everyones opinion though I’m kinda rethinking... 34’s might be the best balance). My problem is that I’m in CA near Tahoe and a lot of trails can have some decent gatekeepers. My favorite trail is more of a “Jeep on 35’s trail”... but I make it work with steel skid plates and a lot of wood stacking/Maxtrax lol.

 

So by some offroading, you mean serious offroading. 35's then, duh.
