Honestly I'd always recommend an old cheap bike for a new rider. When something does break they're more likely to have it be something mechanical and cheap that they can fix themselves and learn from rather than a new bike where it's something electronic and costs an arm and a leg to fix. There is also something to be said about being afraid to drop a brand new bike. And used cheap bikes are just that, cheap, I know when I bought my first bike right out of college theres no way I could have afforded anything bigger than a Grom new.

Fixing things on your bike is the fastest way to learn about it and riding and get your confidence up, IMHO.

My first "real" bike was my 1981 CB750C and I've learned more from that bike than I have from newer bikes since about how they operate and function.

He's been posting in here for a while and seems to be doing a great job learning on his old cheap bike. He practices more on that thing than I did when I first started, super impressive.

Buying new for my first bike definitely has me a bit worried about my first drop for sure. Kind of wish I went used but oh well. I love my bike so far and when I drop it I drop it I suppose and I’ll go from there. Gonna enjoy the shiny ness until then!

The flipside of that is dropping a brand new bike hurts a lot more than a used one that may already be marked up a little.

I'd love to get a brand new motorcycle but they're just so expensive and I don't want a payment right now. Both my current bikes I bought cheap (less than half the price of new) and near mint condition with very low miles. Had good luck with both so far.

Yours is a beauty though, once you pull the trigger no looking back!

I found that patience helps, once I decide what I want I search just for that until a really nice one pops up for sale. Buying cheaper used bikes also helps me justify owning more than one haha

I certainly do love my bike and have no regrets. But now I want a grom too but I can’t buy one until I pay this one off haha.

next bike I buy I will definitely take my time though before purchasing

My first street bike was an 03 cbr600rr I bought it used with 6k on it. The orginal owner was a player from the New York Knicks cant remember his name. Guess his manager said no riding motorcycles. So he sold it back to the dealer. I believe I paid like 6-7k for it cant remember. I laid that bike down many times plus getting hit by a car on it. My 04 cbr1000rr I bought brand new after the 600 was in the shop getting a new frame on it. Sold the 600 for 3k.

Nope. The 600 was getting a new frame put in from getting hit on it. And it was the summer of 04 when I walked into the showroom and said I'll take that 1000. Lol which sadly I was hit once again in 06 on that bike. Still have her and love that damn bike. I've had dirtbikes stolen tho. I think that's what your thinking about

My first bike was an 01 Suzuki GS500. Got it for $1200 and had to have a friend ride it back from Baltimore because i was scared of riding on the highway

after riding a supermoto i think i would suggest a DRZ400sm to anyone new. they are so common and easy to fix but nothing ever goes wrong on one. lay it down and the worst that can happen is a bent lever pretty much.

    i started out on a 72 yamaha dt125 when i was 14?
then to a 17 kawasaki ninja 250 when i was 17 (bought new and eventually hated. probably needed better than stock tires).
stopped riding for 4 years during college.
bought a 05 honda 600rr after which i put down once, dropped twice in the driveway too.
    bought a new 15 suzuki drz400sm
traded cbr for the 2015 honda grom
    bought a 2010 yamaha yz250f
bought my new 2015 yamaha yz450f
    sold 250f
bought my new 2017 ktm 690e
    sold drz
    sold grom
bought my new 2020 ktm 300xcw

dont get me wrong id prefer a wr over a drz they just usually end up going for more.

I already fixed the rear fender and plate mount using extra parts I had in a box, and even upgraded the plate light to a brighter LED module. All is well and it’s ready to go back out again.

For what it’s worth, my 250 has taught me more than I ever could have imagined both in terms of riding skills as well as mechanical stuff.
I’m glad that I’ve had to fix things on it. I’m beginning to actually know the bike, which builds my confidence.
