Totally, Plus once you have to cut stuff off and clean it up to sell that’s more work than it’s worth.

Yeah man, I would have to sell it dirt cheap. It looks pretty good from a far, but it's a little dented up and stuff.

Does anyone know what size tubing most people/companies use for bed racks?

    Reserected from the dead.
    1.5 x 1.5 or any varient. 2 x1 for example is the same wt/ft.

14 gauge is used for most production racks.

Did you check the used markets? Racks are pretty common for sale.

I am not sure what other people use, but if I were to build one for my truck, I would use about 1-1/2", 1/8" wall.

Yeah I have check but I had rather build my own than buy. Plus it’s cheaper to build and I get the designs I want.

I was thinking 1-1/2 or 1-3/4” but wasn’t sure. Haven’t really seen any specs on rack I have looked at that are tube. Thanks

    1-3/4" would be nice too.

Yeah but my only concern would be weight of 1-3/4. May not make that much of a difference though. I may try the outside frame and just see what it weighs and go off of that.

It comes down to just what you plan to haul.

Steel or a few pieces of PVC pipe a thousand pounds or less then a 100

You're right. Probably mostly camping/hunting/fishing gear (not an overlander). Oddly enough I actually use my truck bed as intended on a regular occasion haha.

That’s exactly why I took my Spare tire carrier off my high clearance. Was a pain in the ass always opening the tire gate, and can’t drive with it open. I tried that. Broke the latch. Finally took it off. It looked good, but not practical for somebody who actually uses the truck bed.

I eventually cut my swingout off too. It was just too much of a hassle having to open and close it all the time, plus all that weight that far back. Noticed a big difference once I ditched it and moved my spare to the bed.

Ok so I have a few pieces of round tube, 1.75in, any suggestions on what to do with them? I wanna get more into bending but I don't want to waste the tube. I think the longest is 8ft.

Seems like a good quarantine project for you would be to build a covered patio just behind the garage there. Then you’d have cover from the rain for the sliders/paint booth and room to stretch out a bit. Should come in handy for summer too.

Haha. I’ve been wanting to do the same for my patio. There’s a retractable Is shade idea that I wanted to incorporate using steel cables and bicycle gear as the drive mech.

Now onto the fun part, figuring out how tf to build a bumper for this. This will definitely be the largest fab project I’ve done. Thinking square 4” 1/4 wall tube for the back, and build the wings off it. Simple and effective
