It's why we can't have nice things. Like the foursome standing in the garage around the corner boozing it up. Only one of them lives at the house. At least, go in the garage and make it look like you live there...

I'm tracking your point, but something isn't kosher here......

    2009 H1N1 vs Wuhan Virus

    2009
first case in US April 15, 2009 (second case April 17) CDC
    https://www.cdc.gov/…/pandemic-…/2009-pandemic-timeline.html

    2020
first case in US January 20, 2020
    https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2001191
    ('second' case January 13? CDC
    https://www.cdc.gov/…/…/p0124-second-travel-coronavirus.html )

    2009 (69 days later)
CDC estimates 1 million in US have contracted H1N1

    https://www.cdc.gov/…/pandemic-…/2009-pandemic-timeline.html

2020 (as of march 29, 69 days later)
135, 856 cases in the US of COVID-19 CNN

    https://www.cnn.com/…/co…/h_a2fd276f17df312368033d995366f1aa

The CDC published reports of 1 Million H1N1 cases 69 days into the 2009 pandemic and now, at the same point in this pandemic, the CDC reports 135,856 cases of COVID19
Something ain't right. And the CDC website states that medical personnel should list cause of death as COVID 19 if they test positive, no matter what actually caused the patient to assume room temperature.

    Just sayin'

Here's what I think. About that.

First, COVID-19 doesn't kill you. ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), Organ Failure, Cardiac Arrest, these things kill you. COVID-19 could be a contributing factor but it doesn't kill you. Somewhere around 40% of people who die, don't do it in a hospital. The rest of them die in a hospital and who ever the attending is writes the cause of death on a death certificate. If you're in the ED when you die, it's possible the cause of death isn't accurate but only because death occurs before any test results come back (other than X-Rays).

    The CDC says:
    • Will COVID-19 be the underlying cause? The underlying cause depends upon what and where conditions are reported on the death certificate. However, the rules for coding and selection of the underlying cause of death are expected to result in COVID19 being the underlying cause more often than not.
    • Should “COVID-19” be reported on the death certificate only with a confirmed test? COVID-19 should be reported on the death certificate for all decedents where the disease caused or is assumed to have caused or contributed to death. Certifiers should include as much detail as possible based on their knowledge of the case, medical records, laboratory testing, etc. If the decedent had other chronic conditions such as COPD or asthma that may have also contributed, these conditions can be reported in Part II. (See attached Guidance for Certifying COVID-19 Deaths)
You can read the document here. My interpretation of the memo suggests these are only for COVID related deaths. So if you die from ARDS and there is NO COVID diagnosis, then you died of ARDS. More importantly, I think the CDC is trying to capture all deaths that are related to the COVID-19 virus and to do so accurately. I honestly do not think anyone wants to pad anything as some have claimed.

Oh. And I only recently received my YTMD so your mileage may vary

I read the CDC terms which you have listed. I don't agree with your assessment completely. I think it gives room to fudge. CYA is what it looks like. They've turned this into such as huge deal they need the mortality numbers to be huge to justify their insane predictions. Meanwhile, they've spooked enough nitwhits to spend trillions of dollars. Unemployment is now at, what, 13%? That's crazy. We're approaching Depression Era numbers. Guess I'll just have another beer, and celebrate the fact my wife works for Genentech, and is still fully employed.
