DIY Baja bumper

Hey guys I’m back at it again with another project for my Taco. Was very bored as most of us all are right now and was thinking what i could use all my leftover pipe from my bed rack for. So I’m going to be making a Baja style bumper with skid plates and places for light attachments. ill post photos as i go. Today was just taking everything off and getting the first pipe bent as a draft. Let me know what you guys think as I progress and if you have any tips or ideas.

About to clean up the pipe and weld it on there for the main basic frame. Then i can add more pipe outwards covering the top of the wheel wells. Once that’s done I’ll start adding steel plate and holes for my light bar

 

IMO I'd bring the lower end in some, so it's more triangular and less blocky. Like this.

 

I would do that but my front end is a little bent from the previous owner and i can’t straighten it so I’m trying to cover it a bit

 

And all my suspension setups are stock so it won’t look as good as that truck but I’ve thought about building it like that.

 

what size are you using? and your using actual pipe or tube?

 

It’s 1 1/4” pipe

just be careful with using regular pipe. if you can, go with mild steel or dom tube, these are alot stronger and used in these type of applications. and ideally the top main tube is 1 1/2 - 2". but i got to say your bending and notching skills are pretty good!

I see what you are saying is bent. You can cut out that whole cross member if building a Baja bumper like in the pic @EatSleepTacos posted.
What you mocked up will result in crappy ground clearance

 

And decide now if you wanna add a winch or not. If not I’d maximize ground clearance and approach angle

 

Thanks man. The reason I’m going with 1 1/4” is because that’s the biggest pipe my metal bender can handle. Also I’m new to all this metal work so I’m still learning as I go.

 

Thanks man. I’m not going to be adding a winch to it. I won’t have a use for it and I’m not going to be doing any crazy off roading in it so I’m not too worried about ground clearance. I’m keeping the stock skid plate at the bottom and just building this bumper up until it reaches the stock plate.

 

The bar on the left I’m just using as a reference. Think I’m going to take it further out towards the bend and weld it half was down the main plate.

 

Maine frame is done. Still debating if i should run another pipe across the middle and split it or leave it for one big plate.

 

That’s a pretty awesome build. I like it. I’ll definitely be coming back to that for ideas.

 

Just finishing up the welds but I ran out of grinder blades and welding wire so I’m calling it a day. Going to the store in the morning to get some things and then I’ll be back with more progress and photos tomorrow.

 

I would add another bar across the front large open area in line with the angle pieces
Top bar needs to be thicker maybe 2 inch
But as previously stated the cuts look perfect
