Update: the little ones hatched and on their third day of life fell from the nest. The mother is nowhere to be found. Both hatchlings were alive but with slowed metabolism and food still in cheeks (as it’s somewhat cold and rainy here in SoCal). We are trying to keep them alive. Will update with pics if there is good news. For now, things are a bit bleak. Such is nature and life.

Put them back in the nest. Might already be too late, but that is always what you do. I use to work at a wildlife rehab hospital when I was younger.

But you are right, such is nature and life.
    Good luck.

Thanks to you and the others for the care instructions. (We are somewhat new to birdwatching.) We put the hatchlings back in the nest immediately and then contacted a nearby birder that had much more experience as well as an active hummer in her yard. We slowly warmed them up during the drive to her home. We left the nest intact and have been watching for the mother’s return so that we could return them to her care.

    First, good for you.

The nest was put back in the place it was built right?

Yes, and it was never moved. We moved the birds to it briefly and then moved them to the rescue birder’s care.

Going back through some photos from Tanzania. Taking my time. Less pressured to get them done like I was after returning form the trip. Just a little out of focus, I'm afraid.
Lilac-breasted Roller. The bird was moving into the nest and I couldn't get settled into position fast enough.

Previously I had not even developed this shot. Also Tanzania. Guess I didn't deem it worthy. But upon further review, I like it.

Found some of my oldest bird shots from 2008ish. My post production has not really improved much since then!

anybody know anything about caring for baby Cedar Waxwings? Got a juvenile in the tree in my front yard right now. No sign of mom or dad and I haven't seen any adults around this summer so wherever his nest is isn't close by. He sat in the middle of my driveway for over an hour and didn't move. I walked by him once and he didn't even flinch. I set up a box on the front porch with a water dish and when I went back to grab him he flew into the tree. He's probably safest there so I'm just leaving him be right now. I put out a plate with some cool water in the shade of the tree. Its been pretty toasty these last few days so I'm hoping he just got overheated while going for a test flight around the 'hood and maybe a cool drink and a little splash in the water will help him if he's brave enough to venture down to it.
