What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Keep in mind the ECU doesn't run everything.

ABS for example has it's own computer.

Trac might too, not super certain of that. But in these older truck's it is very common to have seperate modules for everything. The ECU usually is just the engine management and transmission. So just doing a 4wd V6 Manual ECU could very well be possible without affecting your other systems. Look up a wiring diagram or just pull apart your kick panels and part of your dash to look for modules.

 

Abs and trac are the same computer, they’re on the abs module itself. He should be fine to just swap the ecus.

 

not surprised since trac manipulates the ABS to work so that makes sense.

 

hold up. On the 03-04 Tacoma’s and 01-02 4Runner isn’t the shitty half assed ETCS-i used to control the trac with the throttle motor taking over?

 

I’m pretty sure those have it all tied together. From what I understand the Supra guys had a ETCS delete that uncoupled the Throttle motor from the plate and used a spacer to convert the pedal position sensor into just cable driven. It results in ABS and TRAC lights.

EDIT: Almost None of the 2003-2004 Tacomas have VSC/Traction control.

I think I ALMOST caught @Empty_Lord in a mistake, but he's got me on his wording. He didn't say 2002 did, but he didn't say it didn't have VSC either. So, he's right I guess. Dammit!

From the 2003 FSM: The brake actuator with skid control ECU has been changed from the one made by Continental Teves on the ’02 model to one made by ADVICS.

 

I thought I saw some reference to it in the FSM but have never heard anyone talk about it or post a photo of a button/light on the dash.

 

I’ve only ever seen one 1st gen taco with vsc. And it was a fully loaded limited.

 

I should be if it were from an 03/04 4x4 manual tacoma (really hard to find) but im not certain cause correct me if im wrong but the were offered with lockers so they didnt get the atrac my runner got

4 runners lost lockers and got atrac, its awesome when it works

But id still have the throttle body i despise

It would be an straight forward swap if i can find the parts but i want to be extra and want to minimize the amount of tech in my truck

 

YES and it kills the awsome drive these trucks have

 

Nothing comparable with what you all guys do... but I spend 2.5 hours Hand washing , waxing truck , ready for next couple of seasons

Cut out one of the bed supports today. Spot weld cutters are awesome! I'd have a big hole in my bed too if it weren't for the bedliner. Not sure if new bed supports worth my time or just start building a custom bed.

 

Uhaul can get you closer to the Rocky Mountains, just sayin...
